How to empty the drive "C" of un-needed software ?
« on: October 17, 2009, 07:50:54 AM »
My pc has OS  MS  Windows XP  Professional ;the pc has Intel 4 processor and 512 RAM.
Of late it has become very slow. Often I am advised by the pc to make more room in the Hard Disc  as a solution for proper functioning.
1 ) How to this ? I cannot erase  stored data as it is important to me.
  2) How to make space in drive "C"
  3)  My pc has DVD  RW  in working condition.  How to transfer data on to a CD ?
Will  somebody guide  me  soon ?  Many  thanks .

First of all, how large is the hd and how much free space is there? Second, more ram would certainly help. Third, a new hd (either as a replacement or an addition) is also not a bad idea.

  1) The HD is 80 GB  divided into 4 partitions C , D, E, & F  each of  18.6 GB ; I wish to
empty 'C' drive of its unnecesssry contents .

  2) At present it has only 197 MB as FREE  SPACE .
  3) I am a home user ( age 78 yrs ) and have no work other than sending / receiving
emails to my relatives, and browsing on the web for my entertainment . The RAM
which is already working is 512  MB . I do not need more speed than it was
working   before slowing down about a month back.
  4) With my DVD  RW  I was able to transfer my saved data on to a CD with the help
of   NERO-6  ;  it has been lost in "Formatting" ; How can I get the
      same  NERO-6  from    INTERNET  ?

   5)  If I am guided to find  NERO  - 6  i WILL BE ABLE TO TRANFER DATA ON A cd and
then I will not require additional Hard Disc.
WILL SOMEBODY HELP ME PLEASE ? mANY THANKS .

Just move your stuff over to the other partitions.

    (1) Uninstall any unnecessay programs using "Add or remove programs" from control panel.
    (2) Move your stuff to other drives, I think it may clear allmost large space in your drive
    (3) As you are trying to send and receive emails, it is good to install a good antivirus protection in your pc.
    (4) Defragment your windows drive which increases the speed some what better than the present.

To free up space on C: drive you may:

           a.  Reduce space reserved for system restore points.  See Can I control how much disk space System Restore uses?

           b.  Move "My Documents" directory tree to another drive.  See How to Change the Default Location of the My Documents Folder

           c.  Turn off hibernation and delete the hibernation file if necessary.  See How to Remove Hiberfile.sys From Your Computer

           d.  Move the paging file to another drive.  See How to move the paging file in Windows XP

           e.  Use a disk cleanup program such as CCleaner - Slim.

Hi. in my opinion your c partition is too small. I would use a partition manager, delete two partitions  and have two partitions 40 gb each. you can do that without loosing any data.

What information is on D, E & F?  You can redirect the Virtual Memory file, Windows temporary files, IE temporary files to one of those.

I am 70 years old and have a hard rime getting rid of anything.
My advice is to buy a new Hard drive, A big one. Make it the slave.
        Then "Clone" you old drive.
Then make the new drive the master.

Hi yes I'am testing firefox because i'an fedup with I.E. crashing! In the past I have used Ghost. yes that's one way around the proplem however my surggestion will not cost anything. first some space needs freeing up on  "c" drive to download a partition manager. once installed just follow the instructions.

I'am retired and have not got much money. when replying, unless the person states it one cannot assume how much they can spend or there experience with P.C.s
