can't use hijack this and MBAM?
    « on: October 19, 2009, 12:15:55 PM »
within the last month or so, at least, i've noticed my computer just being overly slow. slower than normal. i know most of the slowness is due to how much space i've taken up on my harddrive, but just to make sure it wasn't a virus or anything like that i started to go through the list of what to do to check my computer for malware, etc.

    - i have AVG free v. 9.0 (i had 8.5) --- scanned, only things found today were tracking cookies. avg found this recently though (10/7/09)

    - i ran superantispyware. no issues found
    - i tried downloading malwarebytes' antimalware. the software went through the installation process, but at the very end i got an error message saying it couldn't find a file. i believe it was a .dll file. unfortunately i didn't take a screen shot when i got the error. i think the error is similar to the error i got for hijack this.

just today i got these errors:

this i got when i tried to load hijack this from a while ago when i installed it

i got this when i tried to reinstall it

all files i've tried to download, i've downloaded through the links on computer hope (read this before requesting malware help).

Do I have this right?  He has to rename the file because what's causing his problem is looking for these known fixes (HJT and the Anti-maleware program) and preventing them from running.

Exactly. Not a guaranteed work around, but sometimes it's effective.

You don't rename icons that's useless. You rename the original executable files.

No Harry - you can name a shortcut anything you like - it doesn't effect the associated .exe file.

        Try this please saytheya.

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

        AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt

        Now download and Run exeHelper

        • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
        • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
        • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
        • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file)

Next, try running the below online scan:

        http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. See if you can save a log with it and attach it in the next reply.

        Next post please add:

        • c:\avplog.txt
        • log.txt (from exeHelper)
        • SAS log (if you can)

well..the avp program ran fine. i've attached the log for that.

when i tried to run exehelper, i ran into the following problems. i got a message saying "windows cannot access the specified device..." and two warnings from avg saying it found threats. one of the threats is supposedly the exehelper file.

i tried to download the file again, but now my browser just opens another window and it says "problem loading page" where before it opened the prompt window for me to save it as a file.

i ran the online superantispyware. it found 13 adware tracking cookies. when my computer restarted, i got another error message saying something about "could not find c:/program"

You should have allowed exeHelper to run.

Is this XP SP2 or SP3?

there was no way for me to allow exehelper to run at all. i got a windows error before AVG said there was a threat. a window popped up saying "windows cannot access specified device, path or file." then avg popped up saying there was a threat.

            i have sp2.

Do you have Malwarebytes or Superantispyware downloaded?
