C'mon, think about it. ME had the shortest time line between OSes. Even Microsoft must have thought it was the joke of the century. ME is like the Model-T that gets a new body each year; beautiful to look at, but underneath was the same old DOS with a fancy up-to-date GUI. At least the NT line was a stand-alone operating system that went forward with each new step in technology. No operating system will ever be perfect and each builds on the technology available.

XP finally took the best parts of Win9x and NT and created a hybrid that will be the basis of Longhorn. Actually I find XP more stable than Win2000 and I've never looked back. It's pretty much a given that Longhorn will have it's own set of problems, but they'll be new problems, not problems of the past. I'm not sure why we all need 64-bit computing, but some day I'm sure we'll all wonder how we managed without it. 8)

Thank you for the link Merlin. I read it with great interest, especially the Tom Shinder blurb. I had forgotten about all those blue screens from the Win9x world. We folk along the NT tree forget about a lot of things.;D

As for Microsoft being cash strapped, you gotta be kidding; they have more money than most governments. Top of the tree?, more like a dead end where most Model-T's end up.

All is OK though, where would forums like this be without the trials and tribulations of computer users.

Happy computing in a ME world? I don't think so. 8)

Whenever I try to install SP2 on my dads computer it immediately bursts into flames and melts into a pool of molten plastic. I then have to do a system restore back to before it was installed . Why is this?? ???

Depends on what hardware/software you have installed... Something in there is not compatible with SP2.....

You guys must be doing something wrong... I know of three computers with SP2 and no problems. (Namely, mine, and two relatives.)

That's because once SP2 is installed, there seem to be less problems I notice... But trying to install it yourself is wehere trouble might start... it depends on hardware/software installed being compatible...

Service Pack solves a lot of issues.

One person would not install SP2 because he heard it caused problems. Once he installed it, Dungeon Siege would suddenly work whilst it got him perplexed at first until I noticed he had SP1 installed.

An example of the many things it does right.

There is no reason to keep using Service Pack 1 - why grind progress to a halt when it will make no difference in the long run? Only that you are stuck with ancient bugs that other users are no longer bothered with.

I didn't know there was an SP1. Windows just automatically updated to SP2 as I was shutting down my E-Machine. I noticed more security settings, but since I have Norton Antivirus 2004 (updated continually) Ad-Aware 6 SE Personal, Norton Internet Security, GoBack, SystemWorks, and a bunch of other stuff that makes it impossible to see too many viruses (just the occasional Ad-Ware, easily removed), the only REAL difference I see from WinXP and WINXP SP2 is now the three bars moving across the screen at startup have changed from green to blue. (I like blue better, anyway)  :D Well, I do get a little more security, like popup killers. I gotta love those.

SP2 is more troble than its worth!

I recomend evryone to remove it as it slows your computer down and is quite unnecessary.

I update the rest of the patches but i am annoyed by Sp2 still downloading and asking me to install it evry month,

No, seriously, I never noticed a real difference.

I've heard of it slowing down the computer, but it never worked that way for me... The difference might be noticed if you do not have much RAM... Processor... Etc... Hard disk space also plays into that...
