    FILE CONVERSION PROBLEM! PLEASE HELP!
    « on: October 23, 2009, 08:35:26 AM »
I posted this under Windows XP but thought it would be better to post it here.

I am trying to open a microsoft word document and 'file conversion' dialog
box opens up. It says - Select the encoding that makes your document readable.
Text encoding: Windows (Default) this is checked - MS-DOS - Other encoding.
Can you please help as nothing I do will open up the document.  I also tried to print a pdf file and got the same dialog box.  I have Windows XP and I have a trial version of Microsoft Word 2003.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Is .doc one of the choices ? ?
That's the MS Word file format...

I don't see that just Windows Default - MS DOS and other encoding.  I tried all three and nothing works.

When I get the "choose the program you want to use to open this file" I choose Word and then I get the file conversion box.

It's either not a word document, or it is corrupted, or the extension is not .DOC.

I'm getting the same file conversion box when I try to print a pdf file from Microsoft Publisher.

Publisher 2003 does not feature a PDF option for print output.

Has your trial version of Microsoft Word 2003 expired?

How about answering a basic question.  What is the extension on the filename?

I downloaded a free PDF converter......PDF995.  I just got the trial version of Microsoft Word a few days ago and it's for 60 days.  I'm more worried about printing the newsletter to PDF than the file I can't open.  The extension on the file I'm trying to print is pub.

Have you converted any file to PDF using PDF995?  Do you know how to "print" a file to PDF?

Yes I have printed PDF many times.  I think I have solved the problem.  I recently had some problems with my computer.....long story but it seems the Adobe Reader program disappeared so I just downloaded the free version and I was able to print the file in PDF form.  Thank you so much for all your replies.  I really appreciate it!!!

Ah, I see I mis-interpreted your comments. You could convert the .pub file to PDF but you couldn't view it because you had no PDF reader installed.  It's all clear now.

No I couldn't convert the file to PDF because that file conversion box would come up and that was the end of converting it.  After I downloaded Adobe I can convert it.  I'm sorry if I wasn't clear on that.  Thanks.

Eh, that doesn't make sense. I'm pretty sure not having a PDF reader installed does not prevent a PDF convertor such as pdf995 from converting a file to PDF; it would simply mean you can't view the PDF once it's been created.
