    Problems in normal startup mode
    « on: October 31, 2009, 09:31:02 AM »
I am operating a Gateway laptop running Windows Vista.  All of a sudden it will not function in normal startup mode.  In safe mode with networking, however, it works just fine (which is what I'm working in right now).  Before it stopped working, I would occasionally get the window stating Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down, do you want to wait to see if the problem resolves, etc.  I did run a disk check which didn't seem to uncover anything significant.  Any help will be greatly, greatly appreciated! Thanks!

In safe mode go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to completion...remove the CD and re-boot...

I've quit the exporting so that I can focus on the importing... ;D

Thanks for the quick reply.  I unfortunately have Vista, not XP.  I have an Operating System Disc, states on it "To re-install the operating system...etc" also "WARNING: this process erases all data and files from the hard drive"...is this the right disc and am I going to lose all of my files?

      Thanks!

      sfc will run in Vista...
But you run it from a command prompt...not by booting to the DVD...

This doesn't seem to work.  I go to run and type sfc...briefly get a dos window flash on the screen but then it goes away.

There is a space between sfc and /scannow...

ok, it worked with the space...thanks...ran through the disk verification process, never asked for the cd...didn't seem to make a difference, still only functions in safe mode...

I think the only disc I have is Gateway Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Operating System Disc that I referenced earlier...is this the one referenced in the link?  Plus it says you can't do this in safe mode and the computer is non-functional if I try to boot it in normal mode...

            No.
It has to be ran from booting to the DVD...
The problem with an OEM (manuf.) DVD is it will wipe your entire system and return the machine back to Day One status...

The other option is to borrow a Vista DVD...the versions need to match.
