CD-ROM problems
« on: June 17, 2005, 07:51:32 PM »
I have a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW drive.  When I insert a disk into the DVD-ROM and try to access it in Windows Explorer, an error message comes up saying "D:\ Not Accessible; Incorrect Function."  I have to reboot the computer in order to access a CD in the drive, and if I open it to put in another disk, I have to reboot again to access that disk.  The CD-RW drive does the exact same thing, except it never shows the error message.  Does anyone know what is going on and how to fix it?  Please...I can't install software with multiple disks, and it is driving me crazy.

Check your bios to make sure all the drives are recognised.

The drives are recognized by the computer; they read disks that are already in the drive when the computer is booted.  Then, for some reason, the drive will not work if I put another disk in without rebooting.

So the drives are 'not recognised' unless you boot them with a disk in them?

Yeah, I guess that's right.  However, when I go into Windows Explorer, they show up as Drives D: and E:, and when I go into the properties, it says that they are working properly and that there are no problems.  I also recently found out that if I go into Computer Manager and change the drive letter for one the drives, that drive suddenly works.  But it still suffers the same if I open the drive again.  So, I really don't know what is going on.

OK, so it sounds like a windows problem rather than a bios problem.
        What OS you running?

Does Windows Explorer see the drives if you boot with no disks in?

Back to basics, did you install both of these drives?
Have they always done this or is it something new?

Actually, I don't know because they always show up in Windows Explorer, and I don't ever get any kind of error message anymore even with a disk in the drive.  It simply won't show any files on the disk (or won't read the disk).

They just started doing it one day.  The drives came in the computer.

Is this the case for any disk you try to read or only certain ones?

It seems to happen any type of disk.
