Windows Vista? 7? Premium? Home? What?
    « on: September 29, 2009, 05:30:04 PM »
I'm confused. I'm building myself a new computer soon but hopefully it will be finished before October 22 therefore I want to put an OS on it, a windows one as I will probably be using it to play a few games and don't want to have to use wine, beer or whatever it is called. On amazon (usually a good price) I see:

    Vista:
Windows Vista, Home Premium Edition with Service Pack 1 (PC) - £124.53
Windows Vista, Ultimate Edition with Service Pack 1 (32-bit CD and 64-bit DVD) (PC) - £160.67

    Windows 7:
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, Full Version (PC DVD) - £169.78
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Full Version (PC DVD) - £148.00
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Full Version (PC DVD) - £64.68

Now I was orginally looking at Windows 7 home edition as the only extra for the other editions that looks quite nice is the XP compatibility mode but I'm sure most games will be windows 7 compatible. But now the windows Vista home premium edition costs £124.53 but the windows 7 only costs £64.68? So if I wait I save £60 but I don't really want to wait. This is all assuming:

Vista Home -> Windows 7 Home
Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Ultimate

Don't know what happened to Vista Prof. ?

Any ideas on what to do? Or just go screw it and buy Vista Ultimate as at least that seems a good idea but then im paying £100 for useless crap I don't need.

WINE is the windows API implementation on Linux.

I would get Home Premium, should be enough, unless you do find a need for the extra stuff coming with the more expensive versions.

those Windows 7 prices are mad.

im a dutchman so we got euro's. but still it's mad.

      Windows 7 full home = 200,00
      Windows 7 pro = 299,00
      Windows 7 ultimate = 320,00
      That is all in Euro's,

      now comes the best part.
      Windows 7 full home = $199,00
      Windows 7 pro = $299,00
      Windows 7 ultimate = $399,00
      Accoriding to microsoft.

Windows 7 pro is the same in dollars and euro's !!!! while
      1 euro = 1,41..... dollar ??????
      could someone explain that..

and it doesnt matter which vista you have installed, you get the windows 7 you buy on it.... so
windows vista home -> windows 7 ultimate is possible as a upgrade.

That prices is in UK pounds.
Windows 7 Home Premium is a basic version for people who just surf the net, write word documents, play games, and watch movies.
Windows 7 Professional is for people who want to back up their computers on the network which can get useful, use remote desktop host, so you don't need VNC, use Presentation Mode for business travelers, Windows Server Domain support, and Location Aware Printing.
Windows 7 Ultimate can use Aero Glass while remoting, use BitLocker Drive Encryption, Subsystem for Unix-based Applications, and some enterprise features from Professional.

Windows vista is generally more resource-intensive than 7.
          Aesthetics-wise, personally i refer windows 7.
Performance-wise, for windows 7 there is no difference between what version you purchase. Only difference is features. (additional features aren't core windows components so they don't have an effect on performance).

It all comes down to what you're going to use it for.

If you have some special tie to Vista, then go ahead.
However by purely logical judgement i would recommend windows 7. (price and performance accounted for)

As for what version of 7 to use, well if you're interested in ultimate-exclusive features such as 'bit-lock' then sure to ultimate.
If you plan on using it for normal home-purposes or gaming, i would go with home premium. Best bang for buck. :)

JXY is right, I believe- unless you for some reason want Vista, it makes more sense to go with windows 7, now that it's released.

I just bought a 'OEM' Vista home premium
with an update for Windows 7 home premium
          and paid about $110, Really!

          The pricing is crazy.
