    Randomly Freezes, Improves After Standby
    « on: October 26, 2009, 08:25:27 PM »
I have had my laptop for several months now and since the beginning it randomly freezes (usually while I am on the internet) 1-3 times an evening. Task manager shows shows 100% CPU and all the applications stop responding (or goes very slow). To recover, I will go standby (could be very slow) and after couple of seconds I switch computer on again and it works fine. I have run a virus scan and nothing turns up.

    Here are the specs:
    Manufacturer: Acer
    Model: Aspire 5810t
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
    CPU/Ram: 1.3 GHz / 3001 MB
Video Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express
    Chipset Family
Sound Card: Realtek High Definition Audio

    Any thoughts?

    Is it still under warranty?

      Welcome to CH....

What virus scans did you run?

Thank you for the welcome! I have an extended service plan for it but am not sure how I would survive without a computer for a week or two while they service it :) I am also afraid I will take it in and they will take a quick look at it and not find anything since it only freezes a couple times a day.

I have BitDefender Antivirus 2009 as my antivirus program.

Well, I'd check out the malware forum , run the scans and if nothing shows up with those scans, go with your warranty. You don't want to do anything physical to void it.

You can also download speedfan and check your temps.

          Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
          Post your computer temperatures:

          ===================================================

          Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I was in bed by the time you all posted so I couldn't do anything until after work today. So here is the info you request (assuming I did it correctly.

First, Speed Fan gave an error message when opening but it did load. I don't know if it gave good information though. Here are the screen shots.

Temperature looks fine and I don't see 100% CPU usage.
System Idle Process (CPU not used) is at 77.23%, which is not great, but acceptable. No particular program is using any significant chunk of CPU.

The computer has been acting pretty good today... no freezes. But it is like that. It may act fine for a day or two and then freeze three times the next night. It is very random.

Keep Process Explorer handy and try to get a snapshot, when CPU spikes. I can see from your SpeedFan screenshot, that CPU was at 93% at the moment.
                Something is going on there.
You may also want to check for an infection, as Karnac said.

I wanted to give you all an update as I am sure many are very concerned :) I received my Windows 7 update in the mail yesterday and installed it on my computer last night. While I am less than a day into Windows 7, I have not had any freezes since moving to the new OS. I hope that my problem was just from something in Vista and has been solved. I will let you know if I discover anything so hopefully someone can benefit from it.

Another update... since installing Windows 7 on my computer there have been NO MORE freezing problems that I described in this post. No idea what the cause what, but Windows 7 seems to have fixed it. I will post again if the problem comes back, but otherwise it looks like it is all better  :)
