MS updates slows down 2 laptops
    « on: November 12, 2009, 05:37:15 AM »
    1:
Gateway MX 7120, AMD mobile Athlon 64-3400
2 gig RAM, Srv Pack 3, XP Media Center Edition Version 2002
    Fujitsu MHV2100ATPL  hard drive 95gig

    2:
HP Pavilion Entertainment DV 1000  Intel T2400 1.83
2 gig RAM, Srv Pack 3, XP Home Ed Version 2002
    92 gig HD

The Gateway is used everyday and is updated, virus scanned, spyware scanned several times a week.

The HP has been sitting unplugged and unused since Jan 09 until Oct 31 09
It took hours, even days to completely update everything on the list that I wanted to update ( all priority and security updates ) then software updates, then hardware updates.

Both computer are so slow not just on the internet ( rebooted the dlink dcm202 modem then the dlink dL624 router ). The HP is worse than the Gateway as far as being slow. Just trying to click the start menue results in a delayed reaction.
The HP had version 2.02 of Firfox which I thought might be part of the problem so I updated to 3.5.04 which is a tad faster but frequently the progress bar is hung up until I stop the process and refresh. A few times the stop button wouldn't work so I tried closing the browser and got the end now button but that wouldn't work immediately; it took minutes to finally close. When I tried to reboot the start button took a long time to get to the turn off choice and before that finally started working another end now button came up and
( maybe this is a clue for this computer ) the program called Superanitspyware needed to stop working.

Both computers have zonealarm free but the Gateway uses avira free and the hp uses avg free, the Gateway use spybot and the HP use that Superantispyware which was recommended by a CH member.

I have hijackthis on both so i can post those results if they will help
The best sayings that sum me up in a nut shell depends on the obvious which more often than not is obscured by the talk of the day which sounds a lot like  gnat-thing.

Are running two firewalls, zonealarm and Windows Firewall?  Doing so could slow your computer when online.
