Can anyone tell me of a good free anti  virus  program that is FREE?

I have Avast  but it is not being seen buy  windows  xp  it says I am unprotected.

Is there  anyone that people can tell me about

Avast is one of the better ones, as is Avira. What do you mean it isn't seen by XP? If you installed it properly and you are not already infected it should work just fine with XP

Well I have Avast and it is in my system tray  but the  windows  scurity  shield  is there and wen I click the  windows sheild  it brings up the  windows  screen with  firewall and for anti  virus  program it say you are not protected  and I click the arrow   and it says  it can  see  you  virus program

Sorry it says  windows does not  see all  anti  virus  progrrams.

What do I do??

You need to provide more details. Did you just install Avast? If not, when did this problem arise and what happened just before it arose?

Avast is installed and is in my  system tray  and right next to it is  windows  shield.
And wen I click on  windows shieild it opens the  windows  security window.

And it says  windows fireewall  ON  Anti Virus Program  OFF.

If I click the arrow to  try to turn it on it says.
Windows did not  recognize any  anti  virus program.

I just installed it  and this  happened after I put Avast in.

Is there another Virus  program that  windows will see  that is FREE to use??

You can't install ANY anti-virus utility after your system is infected and expect everything to go back to normal. You should visit the malware section of these forums and follow the instructions there for posting logs.
