Advice Needed: Laptop core 2 duo vs i7?
    « on: November 25, 2009, 02:10:22 PM »
    Hi
I am going to buy a laptop and don't know which one i should get,

    core 2 duo 8700 (3MB cache/2.53GHz/1066Mhz FSB)
    or
    i7-720QM Quad Core Processor @ 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache) ??

    How does the speed work? is it 2 x 2.53 = 5.06 and 4 x 1.6 = 6.4??

I use laptop for some gaming and 3d animation. I know i should get a desktop instead but its mainly for school so..
    plz help!

If you are doing 3d animation then go with the i7......and a realy good laptop cooler!!!
Don't worry about it.  If it's not good at stock, then it's not good.

wow that was an extremely fast reply! i went out for class and just came back! thx
how exactly do the speeds scale up?
when it says 2.55 ghz for the dual core do they mean that speed for two cores or for each?? what about the turbo mode on the i7, is it 2.8 for a single core or 2.8 for all four together?

They don't, unless comparing virtually the same cpu.
2 cores is like 2 CPUs, each at 2.55
4 cores is like 4 CPUs, each at 1.6

Both really. Each core is at X.XXGHz witch means that the entire CPU is at X.XXGHz. The turbo mode will realise that you are doing hard work and give you a boost in speed.
Don't worry about it.  If it's not good at stock, then it's not good.
