Laptop Screen
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:41:00 AM »
Hi computer world,
Just this weekend i dug up my dads old IBM thinkpad A20M. Anyway we stoped using it because it was dropped and the corner cracked. the screen is not damaged but i can't find how to pull the plastic off. The screen flickers at times and when it does it shows a grey screen. I tried it to a regular sceen and it worked fine. But if the LCD isn't damaged i want to fix it. Does anyone know what happened. Did the IDe cable to the screen rip, how do i pull the bottom plastic off?

Displays don't use IDE cables.  The cables for the display are hot connections, that means they are soldered.  You probably shouldn't play around in it if you want it to keep working.

Just because you can't see the damage doesn't mean it's not damaged.  There's a pigtail cable with connector attached to the screen, behind one of the hinges.  The fact that the corner is cracked, the screen flickers and then shows grey indicates it is broken beyond repair.

They are soldered to a very small connector which plugs into the motherboard.

The older IBM's had the display wires soldered to the motherboard, no clip was used.

No problem man, I had to look it up again.  I thought you remembered something that I didn't.  :)

Comda, there is nothing beyond the battery or memory that are user servicable in that laptop.  They were designed that way for a reason.  Judging from the level of expertise you are showing in your posts, you do NOT have the level of expertise to perform these repairs.  Leave it as is or it will NOT function.

Quantos, I may not be the best at this, I admit but even if i damage it more i will learn something. Besides I already fixed the fan, and the way the screen opens.
I just want to know how to pry the plastic off.
