You know, when you don't know something it's best not to advertise it for the world to see.

Cookies folders are located in c:\documents and settings\username\cookies

Your first comment was advice you should have followed. Facebook cookies are not kept with the other cookies. Thank you for taking time to respond.

Of course they are. You have cookie folders. That's where cookies go. Doesn't matter if they're from Facebook or Computer Hope.

That being the case, I would appreciate any help you can give me as to why none of the normal cookie folders have Facebook cookies that show on IE. All of my other cookies display and are available for tweaking. Facebook cookies are not. Nor are there any registry entries that would indicate where they might be. Nor does an IE search with facebook as the search criteria produce any hits. If you use Facebook and can see its cookies in the normal folder then I will revert to what I told my users before retirement: "all computers work by magic".

I really don't know what you are talking about. You "tweak" cookies? They show on IE? Can you please tell us exactly what it is you are trying to do?

Actually, this question and answer is a little more complicated than it seems (or than it should be).

            Different browsers handle cookies differently.

Cookies just aren't something I worry or think about very much until this post.  I look at them occasionally in tools in IE or firefox, but usually don't do anything about it.

I used CCleaner a few weeks ago and it deleted all my cookies and I've mainly used firefox since then so nothing shows in the other browsers.

Firefox supposedly puts all cookies into a file called cookies.txt.

Since this thread started, I've been using Explore to try and find my cookies.  And I can't find my cookies.

This isn't life or death, but it's got my curiosity.

            Firefox (Vista):

            %APPDATA%\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\gs2lr6r5.default

files with the word cookies in them, obviously. Firefox stores cookies in a sqllite database, at least, that's what I gather from the file extensions.

            Or, more directly, in browser:

Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" click "show cookies" to see ALL the cookies. including those from facebook.

            Internet explorer:

            direct view (Vista):

            start-> Run: "%APPDATA%\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files"

            or, in browser... well, sorta

IE7: Tools->Internet Options, General tab, in the browsing History section, click the Settings button. Click "view files" in the displayed dialog.

Internet Explorer 6 Cookies (KB article)

            http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283185

Lastly, ALL cookies are stored together; there is no special place for facebook cookies. If your not seeing facebook cookies with the other cookies in the locations above, then there simply aren't any.

Cookies have no magical powers. they are text files. topics about cookies often turn into the same sort of arguments that a topic about text files might*- one about whether Carriage return, Line-feed, or Carriage Return + Line Feed are the best text file format. It doesn't matter that nobody cares, it matters that there is something to argue about, and people are too damned proud to not voice their opinion, even though EVERYBODY knows that carriage return+ Line-feed is the best, I mean- thats two characters where the others only have 1.

Interesting variety for what I thought was a simple question. Silly me.

Seems to me that the answer is the same as what the old guy said when someone asked him if he ever considered wearing adult diapers. He said "Depends."

If you sign up for Facebook with IE, you get a cookie in what us old folks call the "normal cookie location" -- C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Cookies. Yes, they are text files. Therefore, if you have a desire to see what is in them or to make changes to them, you can do so with Notepad.

If you cannot find your cookies, check your Folder Options to see if you allowing your hidden files and system files to be shown. Default setting is to not allow them to be shown in order to keep them from being tampered with.

If you sign up for Facebook with Firefox, you do not get a cookie. There is nothing in the "normal cookie folder" from Facebook. However, when you look in the Tools\Options\Privacy\show cookies area (as I did before I posted my question) it says that there are cookies which can be deleted. Which is what caused my confusion. I did not realize that the "cookie" names shown might be SQL database files. (cookie crumbs instead of whole cookies?) Further adding to the confusion is the fact that the names shown -- h_user, datr, locale -- can not be found using the search feature of Windows Explorer.

Soooooo...can I then ask: where would the SQL database be and how can I find it?
SQL was in its infancy when I played with it and I have no idea what it has become or what it can do.

A side note based on one of the replies: Blessed are those who know what they don't know.
