Virus updates and all that stuff
    « on: December 21, 2009, 03:06:25 PM »
    Hi guys,
For a while now I've had this thing niggling me about my anti virus software. The thing is I seem to be loosing faith in the established security software and I cant help feeling that all is not as it seems. And that bothers me a great deal.

Here's the thing and I really don't know so please help if you can.My Antivirus software (Norton) is constantly letting me know that it's just had another update and it does it frequently, like sometimes three or four in an hour.If that's the case where are all these updates kept and why doesn't it affect my hard drive space because I cant find anything on my computer showing where all these important updates are.

Also and I've tried this how is it that if you don't have any software on board for virus prevention as in the case of say a new machine no virus problems but if you load one on and then let it expire well you seem to get a problem real quick but if you pay and update again all your problems seem to melt away.
Humm, guess I just don't trust something called the Symantec corporation, even sounds bad like one of those monster corporations from a science fiction movie.

And has anyone got any ideas or thoughts on any other packages that may be out there the reason I ask is that I was pointed towards an anti spyware program on this site that did wonders for my computer and found problems Norton didn't even know about only thing is I didn't have to pay because it was free.(Thanks again for that Patio)

    All the best O.T.

      Hi,
I gave up on Norton as I updated my yearly subscription and then a few months later I was informed that updates are no longer available for my version.  What a rip off.   >:(

Either your version of Norton has a corrupted file (hence not remembering the updates) or they are being blocked by a firewall.  Try disabling the firewall, then manually get the updates from Norton and then re-enable your firewall.

Most of the anti-virus programs out there that claim to scan your computer for free, tell you false infections to scare you into buying their product that will remove them.  Some of them are viruses, so when you pay to have these false infections removed, they actually install a virus!

      I use AVG anti virus, it is free and so far it has not let me down.  Others you could try are;
      Avast home edition.
      Avira Antivir personal edition.
      Bitdefender 10.

      Hope this helps.

I don't think AVG Free 8.5 is any longer supported.

I would think that you would always want the latest version of any av program.  You may not want to download it on the first day it's out, but within a few days it should be safe.

I remember a recent update of one of the free av programs that returned a number of false positives, but the problem was fixed within a day.

AVAST did have one FP one day that was fixed with an update another day.

The free AV's may not have all the tools that a paid AV may come with, but you can always get quality alternatives to the missing stuff  :P

...is not the same as stating that it won't be supported much longer.
