    Computer Crash
    « on: January 13, 2010, 07:44:38 PM »
    Have: Dell Inspiron 1000
    Using Microsoft Windows XP
My computer will start but that’s about it. The cd driver does not recognize cd’s. Computer does not recognize flash drives. Can’t log onto internet. I plug the phone jack into the back of the computer but it does not recognize it. Can’t open anything on computer. Cant open itunes, Microsoft word, etc… I want to be able to get my pictures, music and word docs off the computer. I need the pictures and word docs badly.

Do you have any virus protection?

How long has this been happening?

Did you make any changes to the computer right before this started?

Had AVG virus protection but apparently it's not working.

It's been going on for about a month.

        None that I can remember.

Do you  have your XP CD? You may need to do a repair install. A repair will leave all of your pics and word docs intact.
        However...
If I were you I would slave that drive in another computer and get the data off of it before I did anything else. How experienced are you with computer hardware?

          Not very experienced.

How do I save the drive in another computer? Is it complicated?

You may want to get a friend more familiar with computers to help you.

He is talking about taking the hard drive out of your computer and putting it into a running computer as a second drive so that the data can be copied off of it before you lose your data to hardware failure or virus activity.

Depending upon the laptop, the drive can also be quite difficult to remove. Some really need to go into the shop just to get it out.

This would rather defeat the purpose of the Do-It-Yourself approach to rescuing your data. Some shops may not be very diligent about trying to rescue your data, too.

You might be better off setting your BIOS to boot from CD, and then boot up with a Live CD. Then transfer your files to a USB drive or across a network connection to another computer.

Most laptops have an access panel to remove the HDD with 1 or 2 screws...
Any other design would be foolish.
