it was fine a few day's ago but then it started doing this. i've already went into the monitor settings and some people say to change the refresh rate but i don't have a refresh rate option. all i have is default monitor. i need a step by step instruction on how to fix this. it's driving me crazy!!!

Let's start with this - Download and install the latest driver for your video card. Also, if there is a driver for your display, install that.

You said this just started - what happened just before that - new hw, sw, virus, error, etc?

how do i figure out what video card i have? i installed a game right before that and uninstalled it because i didn't have the right video card so i just said the heck with it.

it's also seemed to slow my comp down a bit. i used to be able to click and go but now it takes it a while to do anything. i think maybe when i uninstalled farcry2 i might have uninstalled something else.

i checked out the device manager under video controller and it says video controller (VGA compatible). in the box below it says the drivers for this device are not installed code 28 and that if have the cd rom that came with device to insert it now. i don't have and have never had the cd rom. it also says unknown manufacturer. what to do now? please be patient because i can be an idiot at times.

Do this... GO to Start, and then RUN, then type dxdiag, then save as and save the file on the Desktop and then attach it here and will tell you what you have.

Okay. Download and run either aida or belarc advisor and either of those will tell you about all of your hardware.

i see nothing about video adapters under any of the headings. the headings are operating system,processor, drives, system model, main circuit board, memory modules, local drive volumes, network drives, users, printers, controllers, display, BUS adapters, multimedia, virus prot., communications, other devices. there is nothing under any of these that lists video adapter. my display header listed (none) under it. does that help?

Then I'm guessing you either have an onboard video chip (which I thought would show up) or your video card is dead or loose. I'd suggest you open the computer and see if there is a video card (the monitor will be plugged into it). If so, make sure it's firmly seated. While you're there, see if you can see the make / model of it.

checked it. took it out, put it back in. still here, same problem. please don't give me a hard time. this comp. was put together with parts and boards from old comp.'s. i didn't install any of the software, i just put it together with this guy's guidance who's in a wheelchair. he's a computer geek and used to repair these thing's. i just wanted some help.

no offense to anyone and what-not, it's just that i find this way of doing things very time-consuming and not very helpful. as I said before, I'm not very comp. savvy and never really expect to be. i just was hoping someone could help me thru a step-by-step way of fixing my problem. i realize that MY computer isn't right in front of you, so it's hard to diagnose and fix problem's. thank's for your help but i think i'll just set this thing out for the garbage-man to pick up next week. or maybe i'll just stick to playing solitaire. blah

no names on the board. a sticker on it says PT-E9, ICT-E9-4, FQC-F9. the two chips on it say NYNiX, and it says GIGABYTE GV-N52128DS near the back.

Another way is to open display properties and then advanced and then adapter. While there, look at 'list all modes'. Try changing a mode with other refresh rate.

enter it where. the only info after gigabyte was GV-N52128DS. is that it? also i went to the refresh rate screen and i'm running 1024x768,TrueColor(32bit)Default Refresh. Their's about 35-40 different one's. Do I just go thru them one by one and see if it works? seem's like a lot 'o crap to go through.

Yes, Changing the refresh rate helps if the monitor is old and tired.
Try 60Hz 1024 x 768 High color

Unfortunately computer problems generally don't have a 'quick fix' especially when it comes to hardware. Though it may seem like a "lot 'o crap" these are the steps you have to take. Inconsiderate I'm sure but hay that's the way the cookie crumbles.

like i said, i appreciate ALL the help I've received. i'm super-grateful. i don't mean any disrespect toward's anyone. i apologize if i have seemed a little pissy. you all know what it's like when your computer starts fudgin' up. i can fix some problems on here but i'm kinda scared to go too deep into uncharted territory. the last time i did that i had to get a new computer(pretty much).please have patience with me.
