Computer shutting down during XP install
    « on: January 17, 2010, 04:48:43 AM »
I just put together a new system and while Windows is trying to install my system shuts down instantly during the process. The computer shuts down in the same spot when the screen is showing this option: "press enter to continue; Press R to repair; Exit".

    Specs:
    Antec 380W PSU
    Abit IP35-E Mobo
    Intel E5200 CPU
    PNY 8600GT
    Crucial DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 (1G*4)
IBM 60G IDE hard drive IC35L060AVER07-0
    Samsung SATA DVD SH-S203

All parts are from a working computer except the hard drive and the CPU. I know the HD is old but I just want to use some old parts to build a HTPC. Here are some facts:

    1. No problem enter CMOS. Start-up screen tests ram ok. The hard drive can be recognized.
    2. The hard drive was connected using 40-pin IDE cable. Tested using different jump setting (Master, Cable_select), same problem.
    3. The hard drive was used in an enclosure with no problem.
    4. I have enabled SATA controller in bios to support the optical drive. But there is no option to select the mode (ACHI, RAID, or IDE).

You may want to try it with only 1 stik of RAM...after the install the additional RAM can be added.
The PSU is a bit on the short side also...how old is it ?

The only other reason i've seen this is a dirty CD.

Thanks for the reply. It was caused by the mobo bios. It falsely shows the CPU temperature to be 98 degree constantly. After I disabled the automatic shut down, everything works fine.
