Okay cool. Thanks for that guys. Im gonna take your advice and go for a Seagate or WD.
Just out of intrest, which out of them two would you guys go for?!
I was looking at an Iomega, but the one that was in my price range, and had the space is a NAS sorta principle. There is no option to connect it to my laptop via USB, which at the moment, is a problem as I dont have a router at Uni. Next year when were in the house I shall, but for now it's a USB job
    Thanks
    Chris

Depending on the model not all WD drives carry a 5 year warranty...
    Seagate does.

I think I know what Chris's concerns were.  I've never heard any hard numbers, but when the first 1TB drives first came out there were rumors of higher than normal failure rates.  It probably had more to do with being the first generation of pushing the limits of technology than the size of the drive.  As far as I know all those initial problems are solved.

I would imagine the same thing happened when ever a larger HD was introduced.

You are right. Bat about p picture you have on your posts? It is distracting.

And of course, manufacturing flaws. and issues with assembly; considering all the variables, it's a wonder that hard drives are as reliable as they are!
Right on. I used to work for Dysan years ago. Their motto was

"On a clear disc you can seek forever."

Taken to mean a certified disc platter  will not fail within in the drive lifetime.

Back to topic. If he does not like Se agate or Western Digital, he could buy a high quality IBM hard drive on rails. Maybe this is what he wants:
