something is using my system resources
    « on: January 21, 2010, 12:41:24 PM »
    Hi
I have an XP service pack 3 system with an intel pentium R 3.6 processor, and 2 GB of Ram. For quite a while now when I try to listen to some music, every minute or so, something uses up my CPU power, so much so that them music makes a horrible scratchy sound and plays slow, and then after a few seconds goes back to normal. Could anyone give me an idea what i could check to see what may be causing this. I have run the anti virus, and Mbam, and they have found nothing. Also i get the same problem if I close down or open a program, or even a web browser, I get the music sounding scratchy and stopping as if something is using my system resources. It happened just now when i opened the task manager, a huge spike shows up on the CPU usage window, and the music is distorted.
    thanks Kwisj

Open task manager to the processes tab. Double-click on the "cpu" title to sort on that column with highest usage at the top. Next time the cpu spikes you'll be able to see which process is using the cycles.

        Hi Allan
the process that seems to be causing the problem is winlogon.exe It normally shows cpu usage of 0, but all of a sudden jumps up to 35, 40 and that's when i get the problem. i have checked on the net to read about problems with this being infected by a trojan. But generally it is supposed to be accomapanied by advertising pop ups, which i dont have. And like i say, I have run mbam and my antivirus that have not picked up anything. Is there anything else i can do to make sure that this process is not damaged?
        thanks for your time

I'd suggest going to the malware forum on this site and following the instructions in the announcement at the top of that page. Let's make sure your system is clean.

            Hi Allen
followed all the protocol, nothing found. Do you want a look at the logs, or should I post them on the malware forum?
            thanks for your time

Hello,  actually to repair a slow computer,  you should perform quite a lot maintenance tasks regularly.

              1. Defragment your system disk once a month.

              2. Remove unneeded programs to release more hard drive space for the system.

              3. Cleanup Windows registry errors to fix and avoid system problems.

              4. Disable unnecessary programs on the startup.

              5. Terminate unuseful WIndows services on your computer.
