    Timed out?
    « on: January 25, 2010, 10:06:40 PM »
    Hello,

I was trying to download a CAM software from FeatureCAM and everything was going smooth at first. The file is like 966MB I believe and it was going to take about 30 minutes to download. So I decided to grab a bite to eat and watch some TV and when I went back to check on the progress it said that Internet Explorer was unable to download the file. It had timed out. I don't recall ever having this happen before. Kinda sucked though because I had looked at it after 20 minutes had gone by and it was still downloading. So I waited 30 minutes or so just to see that it "Timed Out". Could this have something to do with IE? Or maybe the file itself? Just wondering if there's something I can do to prevent this because I kinda need this software. Thanks for any help you can give.

Oh yeah, my OS is Windows Vista.

When you try to download again does it start over or pick up where it timed out at? May need to empty your temporary folder.

Should I delete my temp files and then try again? Or just try again, and if it does the same then delete the temp files?

Also, I was way off on the size of the file. I was thinking of a different one. It's only 244MB. (slow, I know), I have DSL at 1.5Mb/s.

Well I tried again and it was successful. Don't really know what caused it to do that in the first place.

"Internet is too slow" would be my case I think. 1.5Mb/s. But hey, it's free so I can't really complain. I like how it says to "Upgrade to Broadband", as a possible solution.

Who is your ISP?  You say it's free, is it a campus link?  Is there a size limit?

Not free technically. My roommate pays for it. It's like $20/mo through AT&T DSL.

I agree. I would try to convince my roommate to switch to cable, but where I live, there is only one cable provider. I had my Cable and Internet through them a couple years back, and they had the worst customer support, and we would lose cable and internet about twice a month for a few hours at a time. We actually lost both services for about two whole days once, and my girlfriend decided to call 'em up and give 'em *censored* about it. So they pro-rated our bill for the next month. Probably the only time we actually got decent customer service. Oh yeah. AT&T is also the only major DSL provider we have around here too. So i'm stuck until I decide to move to a new city. ::)

Thanks for that link. Unfortunately, it shows the same 2 Broadband ISP's. (AT&T and local cable co.) It did show one more that I was unaware of. MegaPath Broadband Services. They offer: T1 and Bonded T1, Business DSL, Business Cable, Satellite, and DS3-OCx. Never heard of that last one. Outrageous monthly prices. I think they focus mainly on business' that are in need of broadband.

They won't say unless you call. It's considered business class, so i'm assuming it's gonna more than I wanna pay. They are advertising a "Business Class T1" starting at $280/mo for 1.5Mb/s. DSL would be cheaper, but how much, I don't know.

:D Hey I didn't even think about that. I already emailed them with all of my contact info.  :-X :'( They should be contacting me shortly. Or tomorrow. I'll see what they say. If I don't like it, i'll ask that I be removed from their call lists etc.

Who is the local cable company?  If they have upgraded their outside plant in the last few years they may be better than they were then.

DS-3 and OC-3 are strictly business related (unless you are are Bill Gates).

The cable company here in town is St. Joseph Cable Vision. The actual ISP is NPG Cable. So all business is done through Cable Vision. Everybody I know says the service is just like it was 5 years ago.

When you inquire about the Business DSL plan explain you are just unsatisfied with the local providers...ask if there's a break for a SOHO business...remember...you're a landscaper.
