I have gone through the sync program, the screen flashes, viris scan asks for OK to allow, I allow, but then it goes back to origional page and states no devices have been sync'd

I was about to say disable an av on the u3, but patio's right - just get rid of the u3 if you don't need it.

With Portable Apps being so successful i see no reasoning for U3.
Why emulate a CD on a flash drive just to run apps ? ?
