Strange fonts on laptop.
« on: January 27, 2010, 05:15:55 PM »
When I went to open up a word document program on my friends laptop I noticed that when I pressed certain keys different symbols would appear.  For example a colon would give me a strange symbol that would look like an A and an E merged together...sorry for that vague description, if you could picture that AE but merged into one symbol.  Some of the other keys seemed to be doing this as well.  Letter keys seemed to not give me any problems.  My first guess was that the font in word was just set to some crazy theme so I placed it back to Ariel and I had the same symbols pop up.  This problem exists in all of the typing programs she has on her laptop as well as even typing in the run menu.  Any ideas on this?  The computer is running Windows XP Home edition.

character Æ.

sounds like they have their regional settings configured so that they use a "faroese" layout:

Try resetting regional options to U.S defaults.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

I know. Only The Faroese and Danish keyboard layouts apply here though. Apologies if I missed the all-important fact that the setting could also be the Danish layout.

Yes. other layouts have the AE character. But how many have it instead of a colon? And how many of those layouts leave the letter keys untouched? Only two: The Danish and Faroese layouts. At least from what I can see.
