    My disk is no longer readable but I still have the usable code. Is the somewhere I can download the disk without having to buy the whole thing again?

    The legal way to get a copy of Windows is to buy it. We do not give advice about the other ways.

      Nope, but it's perfectly OK to borrow a compatible Windows XP Home Edition CD as long as you use your own "product key".

        Right. Compatible means you have to know whether your key is for Retail, Upgrade, or OEM.

          jkolak:  Since you took the "bait", what are the "compatibility" rules?  I've never been able to sort that out...
               a.  So, Retail, Upgrade, OEM "product keys" are not interchangeable?

               b.  Am I correct in assuming Windows XP Home Edition, Professional, Media Center, and Volume License "product keys" are not interchangeable.

               c.  What about "product keys" across service pack levels?

            I'm deep into that right now myself because I tried to use an Upgrade SP3 XP edition for repair install of my because I heard that you can get errors if you use the old XP (No SP) Full Retail CD. The end result is a WGA failure that I am trying to fix.

            In my research on this problem, I found the Product Key rules here:

            The article isn't about this specific case, but the rules for keys are in the first paragraph of the Introduction, "Warning":

            When you install Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, the media must match the product key. That is, the channel (MSDN, retail, OEM, Volume License, and so on), the SKU (Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, and so on), and the language (English, French, and so on) must match between the product key and the media.

              I think he means that his CD is scratched and that he still has the product key sticker.

                Gosh! I know! I noticed my sentence quality really starts to slip when I've pushed myself too hard and too late.

                I also noticed the "Modify" button disappears after someone else has replied to the thread...  :(
