Is the desktop computer and the new laptop both connected to a router?

If you have a router and two standard Ethernet cables, it would be best to use that.  Otherwise, you'll have to go find yourself a crossover cable, if you want to connect two computers directly to each other..Then, you'd have to install more network interface cards if you want the computers to be able to get to the Internet...

How do you connect to the Internet?  Are you using a DSL modem or cable modem?

          ...but I have a router...
          1.  Router.
               a.  Is this a home router with four "wired" local area network (LAN) ports?
               b.  Is it also a "wireless" router?
               c.  What is make, model number, and possibly hardware version?  Look for sticker or plate on bottom of router.

...the laptop receive the internet through wireless connection .
          2.  Laptop.
               a.  What kind of wireless network adaptor does laptop use (built-in, USB, PC card)?
               b.  What device, if any, does the laptop wireless connection "link" to?

A Belkin transfer cable might be an easier solution.

Yes, it is  a home router with four "wired" local area network (LAN) ports.
It is not a wireless router.well , it doesn't have an  antenna .
              It is SAGEM F@st 2404 router .

well , I think my laptop has a built in wireless connection , used to connect the internet.

            You say:
the laptop receive the internet through wireless connection .
            ... but then, you say:

It is not a wireless router.well , it doesn't have an  antenna .

You statements are contradictory. If you do not have a wireless router, then how is your laptop getting a wireless connection to the internet?

well, sorry for that , excuse my ignorance of routers and networking , I thought when the router has no antenna ; then it is not wireless . so ..I have a wireless router even it doesn't have antenna ?

Either you have a wireless router or you're actually getting a connection from a neighbor who has an unsecured wireless router.  If that's the case, you may get away with it as long as that neighbor is unaware and does nothing to stop it.  But, if that neighbor becomes aware and decides to enable encyrption to secure his wireless signal from anyone using it, then you'll no longer be able to use that wireless connection.

Since your router has no antenna, that is an indication that it *probably* is not wireless.  However, I believe some wireless routers do not have an antenna; in other words, the antenna in built in.  Can you visit the manufacturer's website and search for info on your router?  Do you have user's guide/manual that came with it?

                  1.  SAGEM F@st 2404 Router.  Download and read the "support" documentation provided for your router by http://www.sagem.com.

Suggest you select the correct "country" for support.  I'm not sure whether that would be the country you live in or the country where you purchased the product.  I could not find my country listed, so I selected "Great Britain" to get the following support page:  Sagem F@st 2400 series.

                  Your router appears to provide:
                       a.  DSL Modem
                       b.  Four "wired" LAN ports
                       c.  "wireless" access for your LAN

This is an "animal" I've never seen before...

Are you currently using this router as your DSL modem connection?

I have just bought a new sony vaio  laptop with window 7 and I need to connect it with my desktop ( has window xp ), so I can transfer files to my laptop .
                  2.  You have many "options" available for transferring files between the two machines.  The simplest short term solution is to use a USB thumb drive (aka flash drive) for storage and then "sneakernet" the data between computers.  (Put on your "sneakers" and manually walk the thumb drive over to the other computer.)

The best long term solution is to use a home router to setup your local area network (LAN) properly with file/printer sharing so you just need to connect laptop (either wired or wireless) to your LAN and move the files.  You probably will need "step-by-step" instructions for this.  Using two different operating systems is an additional wrinkle but someone with Windows 7 experience should be able to get you past that.

I think you should setup your home network using the router (actually its four port switch component) to transfer the files.  Like EEVIAC, I recommend you start with a "wired" connection for the laptop as it's easier to setup and troubleshoot the file and print sharing components.

On the other hand, if the laptop currently uses wireless to access the internet through the router, I guess you should be able to make the necessary configuration changes to share files between the computers.

Are you familiar with a Command Prompt window and the "ping" command?

I didn't mean to imply that you might be intentionally using a neighbor's wireless internet.  But, I'm sure this sometimes happens without the user even realizing they are using someone else's internet connection.

Get a LAN cable then go to control panel and in network connection give ip address to your computer something like 192.168.0.1 and in other computer do same and give ip address as 192.168.0.1 and done. now what ever files you want to share put it in sharing and you can access them from ny network  place.
