Max Download Speeds

Just wondering what's the highest download speed you've gotten on your computer. I don't mean speedtest.net results, I mean real files you've downloaded and have seen the speed.

Me, the highest I've ever seen was about 600kb/s on my iTouch and about 325kb/s on my computer.

Also, just for fun, slowest download speeds you've encountered.
Me, about 0.5kb/s downloading a large file. Knowing me, you would know I would have found a better source to download from. Some download mirrors really suck!

I never pay attention to my download speeds...  Maybe I should.. I don't know..    I guess I just take what the ISP says in good faith, although I realize I'll never get the full theoretical download speed they advertise.   If I was running bandwidth-sensitive applications maybe I'd have more of a reason to check..

You must mean 19.11 Mb/s (mega bits/s) = 19,110,000 bits per sec. = 191.10 kbps


If 19.11 MB/s was your speed, then:

19.11 MB/s (mega Bytes/s) = 19,110,000 bytes/s = 152,880,000 bits/s = 152,880 kbps   would be your down speed..

Even VDSL, where the max theoretical download speed is 100 mega bits per sec. = 100,000 kbps wouldn't beat your download speed..  I want your ISP

Carbon has to be getting 191 kbps, there's no way he could be getting  152,880 kbps (see my post above)..  Assuming that you are stating an accurate speed approximation which I doubt, that would mean your download speed averages x10 faster than Carbon's..   

Your stated speed:  2mb/s = 2,000,000 bits/s = 2000 kbps

Carbons likely speed: 19,110,000 bits/s = 191 kbps

You must be going off of what your router or ISP is telling you... Try downloading some files and note the rate...

But data transfer rates are generally shown in an operating system in metric, not binary..

Everyone here is using metric BC, you have to play our way

no. all Operating Systems refer to a Kilobyte as 1024 bytes.

transfer rates in megabits will be using the standard metric notation; but when IE or firefox say your downloading at 19.11MB/s they mean 19.11*1024 kilobytes a second, not 1000.

nope, cable.

And 10 megabytes/sec would certainly would be managable by both my router and PC (gigabit router and gigabit NIC). I think it's a feature of my ISP called ... actually, I forget the name. but anyway, it's supposed to let me scoff more bandwidth from the backbone for short periods. Maybe it was slower and I got a huge chunk? It couldn't have lasted more then a few seconds... I was kind of surprised myself. my downloads average average 1.5MBytes/sec most of the time.

Is that DSL or what?  Having a faster upload than download speed is not characteristic of DSL and, I'd guess, not cable either.  It's normally the opposite.

I am using the BYTES sytem. As in kiloBYTES. The highest download speed I've gotten on my computer was 325kiloBYTES/second. The average download speed for my computer is about 179kiloBYTES/second...And I really don't see how 179>325, can you explain? My head hurts too much right now so I can't really think much farther than what I read, and I read that 179 is greater than 325, which "does not compute"...

EDIT: Now I see that I made a HUGE mistake by not capitalizing the KB for it to kilobytes...[sarcasm]sorry guys[/sarcasm].

Is there a difference between nkb/s and n kb/s?
Because if not, then you can disregard the kb/s and see which number is larger.

If 0>1 then, yes, 179>325, but because 0 is NOT greater than 1 then 179 is also NOT greater than 325.

regarding =/=. I never use that for "not equal" much easier to use the dedicated math symbols

Well I don't always have MSWord open, and I don't know the ALT codes for those symbols, and I don't practice javascript to get a habit of !=. I Know <= and >= mean less or equal to and greater or equal to, respectively, it's just we didn't need to deal with those along the course of the thread.

I downloaded slackware 13 the other day and it averaged 1.5 mbps; which was good. It's the only distro I've heard of that comes on a freaking DVD.

I haven't had time to mess with Linux too much and learn the OS..  I'm busy still familiarizing myself with the various parts of Windows..  Got a few more chapters to read in "Upgrading and Repairing Windows 2nd ED." (great book) I'll be looking for a job in a few months and need to get the more common stuff down first..   Can't wait to get into Linux and some programming though.. I downloaded the Python Interpreter & Tutorial, and also have a big fat book on C++ that I haven't had time to dedicate to, I'll probably use MS Visual C++ for that..   Also in my other book "Upgrading and Repairing PC's", I have a few chapters to read on video and audio technologies... I'd also like to brush up on the chapter on comptuer "BIOSs", and read the last half of the chapter on CPUs, which I haven't finsished..      Shoot, it's ALL relevant the way I see it!  I try to prioritize what I should learn...
