English speaker in Korea, need help with language settings?
    « on: January 29, 2010, 10:21:12 AM »
I have an Acer Aspire 5810TZ with Windows Vista, and generally use Google Chrome (but occasionally switch back and forth with IE).

My problem: with some web pages (right now it's blogspot.com) the search, etc. comes up in Hangeul (Korean) and I need it to be in English. If I go straight to Google or whatever, no problems. I'm thinking that my IP address is telling the websites that I'm in Korea and so they're coming up that way. Any way to change my settings so that I will get the sites (and the tools on them) in English?

When I try to display blogspot.com, it re-directs to https://www.blogger.com/start.  On that page, I see a language selection box in the upper right corner of the page.  Are you seeing that?

If it is, it's in Korean. I can't read it, but I suppose I can randomly start clicking on blue text.

edit: Okay, I did it and it worked. I just hope I can figure out where to click on other websites, too. Thanks for the help. I just knew it would be something simple.

Usually, websites that tell which country you're browsing from, and change the page language accordingly, have either a link or a selection box to choose languages. The languages are commonly (but not always) written in the language they are in (English is English, French is Francais, etc.)

What you can do, is press CTRL+F on a webpage and search for the word English, and you will probably find what you want.

No, that won't do what you say.  Ctrl/F will only find words appearing on the page.  It will not search through what appears in a language selection drop-down box.  Drop-down lists are coded into the HTML file but do not appear on the page.  So, a search via Ctrl/F will not work.

Some pages use links to the english/other language versions of the site. CTRL+F would find that.

Your missing the point...he has a Windows install from another language...he wants to change that...
It can only be done with the parameters above...

First of all, it's "she has a Windows install..." not he.

Secondly I do NOT have a Windows install in another language (unless what you're saying is completely different than what I'm reading). I believe it's all tied up in my IP address. I was hoping to find a way to tinker around with Internet settings to somehow tell websites that I'm in the U.S. and not Korea so that I'll get the American versions of websites instead of Korean.

I resolved the blogger issue thanks to the help of an earlier post. I'll just have to muddle through the rest of them as they arise.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Sorry about the gender confusion. Now, what you can do is use a proxy located in the US or Canada, or pretty much any english-speaking nation (the best one would be located closest to your current location) to escape the IP-tracking.

          1.  What if she tried one or more of the following options:

               a.  Internet Options (Language Preference).  Access Start -> Control Panel -> double-click Internet Options -> select "Languages..." button -> "Language Preference" window appears".

               b.  Regional and Language Options.  Access Start -> Control Panel -> double-click Regional and Language Options -> set Location at bottom".

dahlarbear- thanks for the suggestions, but the computer is already configured that way with U.S. settings. Those of us in the Army have learned not to change silly stuff like that when moving overseas.

Helpmeh- may look into the proxy server idea... I hadn't thought of it.

When you said IP, the idea came to me. I've used an American proxy to get into American-only online games (where they check your IP) before.

            Hi everybody!
I have a similar question: a computer with French operating system (XP), registered in France, but now I'm in Japan and it shows most pages in Japanese  ???
Your answers to the previous question were most useful, but now I would like to know HOW can I change a proxy so that websites wouldn't know I were in Japan? Anything in English, French or Russian would be OK, but not in Japanese...
By the way, I would also love to listen to free radio stations, but they don't work here, detecting that I'm in Japan  :(
I'm really a novice, so please be specific in your answers! Thanks in advance!

Go to http://tubetunnel.info/ . It is located in France, so sites will think that's where you've come from.
