    New case/same motherboard
    « on: February 03, 2010, 11:04:03 PM »
I've upgraded my desktop tonight. I added the following:

    HEC Prime Mid size Case
HEC 585W PSU (weak, I know)
    2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
    Intel E5400 2.7GHz CPU
GeForce GT 220 1GB GPU (not installed yet)
WD 160GB HDD (not installed yet)

The case came with a 120mm fan in the rear for outtake. It's connected to my motherboard with a 3 pin connector. The connections do match up, and the mobo even says, "Sys Fan 2". The problem is that this fan only comes on for the first 5-10 seconds that the PC is powering on, then it just shuts off. Anybody think they might have an idea of why this is? Thanks.

Is it connected to the same plug as the original dell case fan?

Yes sir. The only other spot for a fan to plug into on my G33M02.

Our Mobos must be slightly different. I just took a look at mine and mine is marked AN2 where the case fun was plugged in. All of my case fans run off of the PSU so I didn't use that plug. I expected to get an error message and have to change bios  settings to cut it off but never did.

Actually, I bet if you look a little closer, and slightly to the left, you'll see the SYS F. Its somewhat separated from the AN2, but its there.

Any how, I know it works and I don't want to buy a new one and have the same issue. I could buy one that plugs directly into the PSU, like yours, but I wanna know why this one doesn't work, when the original did.

Have you took the orginal out and plugged it up just to make sure it still works?

Thats, odd. It doesn't run either. Is there maybe a setting in BIOS to keep it running? I'm gonna take a look.

To be honest I never payed attention to mine to see if it stayed on all of the time. I'll take mine out and hook it up right quick to see what it does. My flashlight ran down last night when I was doing my swap so I'm having a hard time seeing, mine does say Sys FAN 2 though.

Yeah this is actually my mom's PC that i'm ugrading so my younger brother can play some less demanding games. So i've never really payed attention either. I honestly don't think it ever worked, because everything sounds just like it always has. No extra fan noise and what not.

Ok I hooked mine up and it hasn't shut off yet. Everest is showing it at 950 RPM with core temps at 20C and Mobo temp at 23C. I couldn't find anything in BIOS.

Hmm... I wonder what the problem is. The BIOS on these Dell's are useless. Don't have any control over anything. Do you think an update to the BIOS, or chipset driver could help?

If all of your standoffs are in place and your sure everything else is correct (the only thing I saw in my setup that I could screw up to bad was the AC '97 ,HD Audio cable) I would probably just go get a MB to molex adapter and hook the fan straight to the PSU.

My case came with built in standoffs. Well, all but two are built in for ATX. Since my board is Micro ATX, I had to use the 2 remaining separate standoffs to fill in the gaps. But thats all good to go. Didn't have any problems there. Can I buy this adapter at a local retailer? I have to pick up a couple SATA cables tomorrow anyways.

I would think that anyone that has SATA cables would have one. Here is what you will be looking for.

Sadly, thats not the situation. Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, and Walmart don't carry the power adapter. I seen where Best Buy has a 2' SATA Data cable for $20, and Office Depot has 1.5' cable for $3. I'll never understand retail sales.

If they didn't have that one you could just buy any 4 wire adapter and splice it in but by the time you do that you would just as well off to buy a new $10 fan with the 4 pin on it to begin with. I saw a couple of fans on bestbuy's website that said they came with the adapter. If you have a RadioShack they might have the adapter.

There are a couple of PC shops here in town that I could check out. I kind of refrain from going into those places. I built a system a couple years back, a total $1800 was spent on all the hardware and Vista 64bit OEM. I wanted to sell it, and the most they would give me was $300. He said he could only get around $400 for it. I guess i'll suck it up and go see if they got what I need though. They did just expand the business and the owner got himself a new Benz, so they must be makin' a killin off of those $400 ($1800) systems.

Everest is showing 3 temps for me:

                        1.Motherboard - 34C
                        2.Aux - 84C
                        3.WDC HDD - 37C

Please don't tell me that Aux temp is my CPU. I've applied Arctic Silver thermal compound as I always have before. The only thing I can think of is the heatsink. It's the one that was on the Celeron. I couldn't switch because the E5400 came with the push locks, and my board has the screw locks. I know it's secure though. Also, the CPU fan is running @ 4355 RPM.

I just noticed it's showing a monitor next to the Aux temp. So I guess its reading the integrated graphics temp.
