    Vista to 7 upgrade.. 32 bit or 64 bit???
    « on: February 02, 2010, 05:12:54 PM »
    Ok... demons seem to be exorcised form my computer now (Thanks guys!)... and I'm wanting to go to "7"..... my question is, I know know that 64 bit accesses more "RAM" etc.. are there any pitfalls to be considered??? I have 4 GB installed, and found out 32 bit doesn't see it all....

        From what I hear it's not a bad idea until the industry gets more up to speed on 64 bit compatibility.

        I recently upgraded to windows 7 64 bit (from win 7 32 bit) because i upgraded from 2 to 4 gigs of ram. I've been running it for about 2 months now and everything is just fine. Although you cannot upgrade from vista 32 bit to 7 64 bit. Or from any 32 bit to any 64 bit. If you change from 32 to 64 bit you must do a clean reinstall.

          Perhaps my information is a bit old now, but a year or two ago there were reports of several 32 bit apps that were broken on a 64 bit OS.

          That is the fault of the creators of the 32-bit applications.

          And they should be properly ostracized.

            @Hankster58

            Considering you have 4 GB of RAM installed in the system i would definitely recommend that you use a 64bit operating system. If you decide to install a 32bit operating system, it will not recognize all 4 Gigs of your RAM. As for worries about certain programs that will not run in 64bit windows, you will have to do some research. Usually device drivers for 32bit OS's will not install or run correctly on a 64bit OS. You must consider this if you decide to switch. Go to the manufacturer's website of all of your hardware and check to make they have a 64bit driver available. If they have those drivers available for your hardware then the next step is to make sure that the programs you use on a daily basis will run also. Although this shouldn't be a problem, you may run into some issues with certain programs. I know that iTunes is available in 32bit or 64bit. Mozilla will run in 64 bit without any problems. "Most programs designed for the 32bit version of Windows will work on the 64-bit version of Windows. Notable exceptions are many antivirus programs."  --This is a quote directly from Microsoft's website. I suggest you check out this page for more information about how to decide if a 64bit OS is better for you: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/32-bit-and-64-bit-windows-frequently-asked-questions

            Been running both Vista 64 and Win7 64 ever since the BETA and i have yet to find an app that won't run on a 64bit OS...
            Other than some of my older Win98 legacy apps but those can even be muscled into working if you know what you're doing...
            So as far as apps not performing i'd say that's a red herring...
            Drivers are what the User should concern themselves with...not apps.
