Windows 10 and 11 / Re: WANT THE CLASSIC LOOK
« Last post by Allan on Today at 03:56:52 AM »
If I thought EP was going to cause problems, I wouldn't recommend it. I use it on 5 Windows 11 Systems and have never had an issue. If you look on Google for complaints about ANY app, you'll find them. Use it, don't use it - your choice. I don't need you to tell me how to do what I do.

And if you know enough to use disk imaging on a regular basis, you wouldn't have any concerns.

What you want here in many ways defies expectations that most applications are going to have, so it's not entirely unexpected to see problems. Explorer Patcher in particular works by effectively replacing bits of Windows internally with it's own; The problems people experience are typically the result of Windows updates, which (whether intentional on Microsoft's part or not) cause problems with those patches.

I think Open Shell replaces the entire taskbar altogether, which makes it a bit more resilient to that sort of thing.

Personally I use 'StartAllBack" on Windows 11 which has a number of similar options. It doesn't allow for what I consider the "classic" appearance (eg classic theme in win7 which mimicked even older windows versions). I use the setting(s) that make The taskbar and start menu more like Windows 10. Which is not to say that I particularly  *like* The way Windows 10 was either with regards to the taskbar and start menu, but I had gotten used to the smell of that particular outhouse.

This is to Allan: I really appreciate your suggestions in my particular case of trying to get info on how to bet my Win 11 start to the classic look with those 2 apps you recommended. This is just a suggestion ..please  when someone here ask for assidstance don't just simplify a response by entering links whitout xpressing some problems in using them. I had no problem getting and installing Open shell and while i was having difficuty getting explorer patcher on various sites, including Github, I came across negative responses into using the Patcher especially, which you omitted in any of your responses. Most of those negativities say have screwed up their win 11 worse. The main reason I was looking for the classic look was hopeing i could get rid of my startup of win 11 which i could not adapt to. So far cause of those responses, I have not installed the patcher because of it. As of now, with just Open shell I did get a more pleasing aspect start as compared to the original win 11 start. Now, I have come across the news  that there are numerous apps that claim to do the classic look of previous windows starts.  some you pay a measly $5.00 and some are free. ...all with positive and negative results.

Hardware / Laptop battery removal
« Last post by diablo416 on May 30, 2024, 01:47:20 PM »

Hello,

I removed the battery in an older laptop. (asus 17 x712).

Without a battery the laptop does not perform as well.   From reading this is due to the lack of power from the battery.

Is there any software or hardware hack that will bypass this?  Will connecting a higher powered adapter resolve the low voltage?

I no longer have the battery.

Thanks,

Other / Wireless Earbuds

I am shopping for a decent pair of earbuds that I can use for both listening to music while exercising and for phone calls while on the go.  I need a pair that has a quality microphone (for talking), and ideally ones with 'ear hooks' because without them, they tend to fall out of my ears while exercising.  I have used a variety of lower end ones and would be willing to spend up to $200 if necessary.  I have a Samsung Galaxy phone so it was recommended to get Samsung earbuds as they would work well with my phone and are of pretty good quality.  They do not have ear hooks, although one of the models seemed to stick into my ear nicely when I tried them in a store recently.

Any suggestions?

Thanks...

Computer News / Re: FCC: Wind Down the Affordable Connectivity Program!

That is a very interesting thought, nationalizing the ISP end of this Net business. True, I have not lived in the U.S. for a long time, but I still stay connected to all sorts of issues that go down in the U.S. and I think this might be the first time I've seen this idea posted on any site. Or I am simply forgetting a previous posting on another site.

Now I better explain myself on one point; when I write it is an interesting idea I am not necessarily stating that I approve the idea. But I am certainly not doing a File 13 with the idea, either. It's worthy of discussion. Of consideration.

Frankly, I think the Internet has become way, way too important in all manner of life in the U.S., and many other nations, and so certain operations need to be re-examined --- re-examined as to whether a given service should remain a commercial entity/operation. Of course, there are a whole bunch of very intelligent folks that will slam the door in your face when you propose going the government way with certain operations. In fact, I got in big trouble over at the ISOC for an idea that came close to something like we have here. The then-president was so upset he banned me from some meetings.

Okay, I am going on-and-on here , just like the old man I am. Sorry.

That's true, Notepad++ is good, as also is the idea posted above about an odt product; but the truth is that Notepad just up and disappearing is a concern over and above the choice of editors.

No program should just disappear like that. Personally, I think trying to figure out why that disappeared should be first on the ToDo list. Then decide if you want to reinstall it or just get another editor. Truth is, on all my units from Windows 7 to Windows 10 I have a number of editors installed on all. Each has a purpose.

But, to repeat, I strongly suggest the reason for that MS Notepad up and leaving should be figured out.

And sorry about that AI joking. This really isn't a joking matter.

Funny how an old brain works sometimes; your post reminded me of a thread from last year. Well, I couldn't remember at first it was from last year, but went looking around in my files and sure enough, found it.

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=3110069

I'm going to have to do some further studying about that idea, but I also would like to emphasize that I have never seen that happen before on this unit with the SeaMonkey browser. And that morning I spent a number of hours on some research so I went and grabbed some data stored about the number of times I accessed YouTube that day and I'll show you with an attachment.

I'm obviously intending to push this one and eventually will go after Google. They already know me as a pain in the neck, so no point in disappointing the new employees there. Been a few years since my last back-and-forth with any of them. In fact, even the special group we used to have seems to have broken up.

But I'm going to study your thoughts before I go further with this. It could very well not be related to any sort of system input at the Google end.

Okay, but to go further with troubleshooting would require some information from your end as to what you have tried thus far?

I suppose I really should have started at my end with a question before I offered what I did, and that is whether any sort of Windows Update was done just before you noticed notepad was gone? Whether any security update or scan was done using a third party tool? Any sort of system change?

Actually, the Windows Update would likely only be of the security sort. I don't know if that other update program I paid for on one of my units is still running as I haven't been to that house for a number of months. This Win7 unit here at this work station only gets the security stuff updates.

One more thing, but pulling on old memory here, and my memory is slipping with age and the chemo, so might be unreliable. But I seem to remember that notepad was a favorite target of security related attacks, so that may be worthy of a thought --- maybe a BIG "may be".

But, even so, I wouldn't be too happy if a tool such as that just up and left the system. Of course, your unit may be the first case of true AI changing to be creative on its own and didn't like that software. If that proves to be the case you now have a one million dollar computer. Maybe worth more.
