    win 7 help
    « on: April 03, 2010, 08:34:13 PM »
I have win xp pro and I have two programs  that I use and need but they are just for win xp.

Now I am about to get win 7. and I here that it has a win xp Mode in it.

So I wont have to re buy the two programs that I use a lot.

Wen I go on Youtube to see videos that people made about the XP Mode in win 7.  they say you have to Download two programs.

I thought everything you need for the xp mode will come in  win 7.?????

Pretty much anything that runs on XP will run on Windows 7 out of the box.

PROTIP:  find out how to split your HD into two partitions,  Then put Win7 on a different partition so you can boot up both.

Only a few versions of windows7 can open up windowsXP Mode with it coming free.
      Ultimate is one of them.

They put XP mode in there JUST IN CASE something doesnt work with Windows7.
Its going to happen.  Some,  SOME,  (like 1/50) programs wont work with windows7,  I cant list any on the top of my head,  but I know some dont.
      Nothing major though.

Also,   in case you dont know,  most Windows7's are 64 bit.
Assuming your on a 32 bit XP, then 32bit programs usually dont work with 64 bit programs.

Again,  if you have no idea what im saying,  google it.

I ve been running Win7 since the 1st Beta was released...right thru the RC and now the final version and i have yet to find an app that would not run properly on it...
This even includes some older apps that were originally written for Win98...

So i'd say you don't have much to worry about.

I had the same fears about upgrading from 98 to XP. "will my programs work".

      They did.

With Vista, the fear was even greater.a few programs (mostly older games) had a few minor issues, but I was able to run most of them without incident (Need for Speed:High Stakes, which is for windows 98, being one of them)

The only kind of programs that will not work with windows 7 are badly written programs.... in which case, regardless of what you paid you really should look for an alternative.

Anyway I remember a program that wouldnt work.
        Starsiege Tribes.
The mouse for some reason acts up real bad on 7 when Tribes runs on it.

But Tribes is old as heck, so....

        I Found this:

        http://tribes0.com/trorbs.zip

        which supposedly:

        Quote
includes a Vista/Windows 7 fix, updated master servers and latest 'Last Hope' patch(I think).

I can't use it though since I don't have the game.
