Hi Speed USB Port for Mobile Broadband ?

Hi,

I recently got mobile Broadband ,  & I am getting a message on my Windows XP desktop saying there is a hi speed port available which will make the device work faster if I plug it into the recommended port.
I have located the port in the list but I don’t know how to set it up, or where it is physically located   ?

My AVG security says I am directly connected to the internet & gaming mode is disabled if this is any help.

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

What's the make/model of the laptop  ?

It's a Fujitsu Siemens Desktop Scaleo P.
OP. system = Windows XP Home,  version 3, 32 bit

& that's where my tech knowledge ends !

Are you by any chance plugging the USB broadband adapter into and external USB hub ?  If the hub is using the USB 1.0 standard, then you should remove it and directly attach it to your computer which uses the USB 2.0 standard (faster data transfer speeds)

Yeah, it sounds like you are using a USB 1 port, and the USB modem supports USB 2. If you have a USB 2 port, use it. But I bet the performance difference is going to be zero since USB 1 = 11Mbit, and your broadband is probably around 1Mb

 The USB modem stick is plugged directly into the computer,which has 4 ports (2 at back & 2 at front) but I don't know how to tell which is the USB 2
port ? 

I'm using the front ones for ease of moving between desktop & lap top, but have tried it in the back with no noticeable difference.

According to the info. provided above, you computer supports USB 1.0, only. It would specify 2.0, if it had 2.0 ports..

However, the computer seems to have Firewire ports, which are faster than the USB ports in your computer.

Actually, you're computer uses a 6-pin Firewire ports... The link I provided for the adapter is a 4 pin firewire adapter, so void that link..

You'll need to find and adapter that plugs into the 6-pin Firewire port and converts it to a USB port, preferably 2.0...
