How to install the Backup utility from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition
The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP Home Edition.
Manually install the Backup utility
To manually install Backup, follow these steps:
   1. Put the Windows XP Home Edition CD in the CD Drive.
   2. Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location to start a wizard that installs Backup:
      CD drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
   3. When the installation wizard is finished, click Finish.
So why did they never fix this with Windows Update?
Or, did they and I missed it?
::)

what would they fix? they made a conscious decision that backups where something done by "professionals".

Nobody said the logic was sound.

besides, the backup application included is pretty crappy. Personally, I prefer to copy my files as files, rather then have them copied in some undocumented catalog.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Now using that lack of logic.
And given that you are a professional.
And you neither like it or need it.
Therefore it should have been...
Included int he Home Version...
And left out of the Professional version!

I found out the hard way how Windows built-in backup service works...
