no sound - didn't know where to post
    « on: May 13, 2010, 11:23:41 PM »
I bought the computer used with ubuntu on it.  Its now version 9.1.  There has never been any sound.  How do I know if there is something that I can or if I have to get it repaired?

    Thanks. ???

Does the computer have onboard sound or an expansion card (PCI or PCI Express)?  If its onboard, access your BIOS settings to see whether sound has been disabled there.

Did you get speakers with it when you bought it?  Or, are you using speakers you already had?

I want to know what you're talking about but I just don't.

Could you please walk me thru:  how to find out if my computer has an onboard sound or expansion card;  how to access BIOS settings.

      No speakers.

      Thanks.

      No speakers.

That's your problem then. you need some computer speakers in order to hear sound.

When you get them, plug them into a small, round, green plug on the back of the PC somewhere.

No.  A computer doesn't need speakers to beep.  My roomate's worked fine with no speakers.

Do you have a start menu like Puppy Linux if so then go there to System folder and click on hard info hardware information then go to input devices and it will show you your speaker.

Actually that is all I know but mine works on Puppy Linux so it should on Ubuntu.

That is only if your computer has a PC speaker inside. Most computers now no longer have those.

Go get some speakers and post back. If you get them used they should cost too much, I've them for $2 before at the local Salvation Army thrift store.

And, your roommate listened to what on his computer?  Music, audio content from the web, or just beeps?  While it's true some computers have internal speakers, the big majority do not.  So, they require external speakers.

However, external speakers are usually not needed for the beeps that computers emit during startup or to indicate certain hardware errors.  So, if that's all you care about hearing, then you probably don't need speakers.

Oh, I just saw Cityscape's post.  I see I'm duplicating his comments to some extent.

          Let's start again
          tell us
          what kind of computer
          ram
          speed [cpu hz]
you can have a look around here
          http://ubuntuforums.org/
there is a whole section on sound problems
9.10 seemed to have lot of reports of sound problems, which were supposedly solved by 10.04
Myself I'm on mint9 which I like looks more polished & has easier to follow menus

9.10 seemed to have lot of reports of sound problems...
9.10 had problems with "everything". It was widely known to be the most buggy Ubuntu release ever. There are still bugs that haven't been fixed! That is exactly why I never used 9.10 Karmic, I used 9.04 and then did a clean install of 10.04 a few weeks ago.
