After I come out of sleep mode, none of the icons on the desktop respond... ( Windows 7 Home premium) ... I have to reboot in order for them to work.  Is this something I should be concerned about  -  other than being an annoying new feature?

I'm not a fan of sleep or hibernate modes. To this day, they've never been perfected. Instead, try setting the hd and display to power down after a defined period of inactivity. Both you and your system will be happier.
