Strange virus on computer
« on: December 31, 2010, 05:42:34 PM »
I'm new to the forum, but I feel like this is probably the forum to post in.

So my laptop, while playing video games, started creating pop-ups that were "scanning"my computer and trying to fake windows notifactions. Knowing that it was most likely a fake program, I made sure not to click on anything asking me to "download to protect" myself.

The problem is, this virus is "protecting" me by preventing me from using any .exe files, or even accessing anything on the internet. Though I have found, that I can work around the virus by using https in front of the url, and if the site supports it, I can access it.

Also after doing some research, I tried opening regedit, just to see if I could even try anything, but it's also a .exe. And then to make matters even worse, I couldnt end the processes long enough to try anything because task manager is blocked also.

So what I think I need to do is try and boot a linux build so I can actually do something to try and salvage my data, and maybe even try and work on getting rid of the virus. But my question is, if I can't access things like regedit, hijackthis (the website doesn't work under https, but I havent tried putting it on a flash drive and then run it off of that, I might want use an external drive for anything)

Overall, I want to see if anyone else that has a better understanding of windows/computers could give me some suggestions to how to fix this.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: it seems the rest of the forum has the same problems with .exe files, though after reading them, I'm not sure how any of them were able to open any of the files or run any of the scans that are typically done, because they are all .exe. I guess someone will help me get through this...

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
Save Rkill to your desktop.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

* Rkill.exe
* Rkill.com
* Rkill.scr

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.
