I got back early, so I did as patio suggested and ran the extended test from Western.  The test took about one and a half hours and the problem seems to have gone away. Go figure.  I am not a greenhorn nor a beginner as the site says.  I would never have done what Geek said.  I would hate to try to use his computer.

Allan, I see what you're saying.  When System Idle goes down, it is usually searchprotocolhost.exe that goes up 1 to 4.  Since the problem seems to have gone away, I'll mark this problem solved.

    Thanks for everybody's help.

That's Windows Indexing. The "problem" hasn't gone away, indexing is simply finished for the moment. You can disable Windows Indexing Service if you don't need it.

Do you do a lot of file searching? If not, you don't need it. I disable it on all systems.

Thanks.  I turned it back on so now I'll turn it off.  Thanks for all your help.

Ron did the long test give you a clean bill of health for the HDD ? ?

I am not a greenhorn nor a beginner as the site says.
The former (greenhorn) is based on the number of posts you have (despite the lack of connection); the latter you can change in your profile if desired.

Actually, The default (built-in) Windows Indexing service is cisvc.exe (Content Index Service) and cidaemon.exe (Indexing Service Filter Daemon) on Windows XP; SearchProtocolHost.exe/SearchIndexer.exe are part of Windows Search, which comes with Vista and 7, but is installed separately on XP, as a product called "Windows Desktop Search" (None of my machines running XP have "Searchprotocolhost.exe" for example, because I never installed that) It is basically a more advanced version of the indexing service that XP already has (or it facilitates it, Not sure).

I make note of this because if Windows Desktop Search is not installed on an XP machine and there is a SearchIndexer.exe or Searchprotocolhost.exe running, particularly if it's stealing CPU cycles, it could be malware. I'm not sure if Windows Desktop search is pushed by Windows Update.

        Good info there B.C....
        Thanx for the heads up.

I checked all my updated PC's...none have Desktop search so i don't believe it's pushed thru either.
