cannot connect to internet

i am running windows xp on a 2004 emachine pc. i cannot connect to the internet. i have tried 2 seperate cable modems 2 seperate times, and i even tried connecting thru the phone line with an aol free trial cd. please help

How are you connecting to the modem? USB or Ethernet? Who is your ISP? Any software for you to install?

right now i am connecting to the internet with my old 1997 computer set up next to my emachine via cable modem. when i tried to troubleshoot with my isp, Comcast Cable, they gave me a Comcast software cd which didnt work and told me to connect using ethernet
