The current best of breed are MalwareBytes and Super AntiSpyware. The free versions won't run resident but if you scan with them regularly that should be fine. I also recommend SpywareBlaster - update the definitions weekly. But again, NOTHING is more important than an intelligent and aware user.

Allan, you can be as intelligent and aware as you can possibly be and still get infected. Some years ago, my laptop was infected with a backdoor trojan when I went on-line looking for a free AV program.

SuperDave - I didn't mean to suggest that smart computing is all that is needed - only that all the protection in the world won't help you if you download crap or open unknown links. You clearly need both - good software protection AND smart computing, as I'm sure you'll agree.

I agree. Although in my work I have to go to some dangerous sites to check out things and, knock on wood, I haven't been infected yet. Mind you, I've had some close calls but my protection worked.

I have McAfee for a free trial which expires in five days and am thinking of Microsoft Security Essentials. McAfee always tells me in their scan reports they have eliminated one trojan. It's never more or less and there is never any mention of the elimination of spyware, adware or malware.  Also, is PC Checkup any good? I really need something that can run without interferring with my other stuff and the smooth running of my laptop. Is there any better free anti virus programmes than Microsoft Security Essentials?
    Warm Regards,
    Diane

MSE is fine. "Better" is subjective. MSE, Avira and Avast are all good choices.
