I don't know which HP Pavillion you have but take a look at this link.  What is your operation system?  Look at the 5th post on this link.

      Hi
Thank you for reply. The laptop is a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC (dv6500) I'm running windows 7 just now but the problems started before testing 7. I was on XP (i believe)

I know it's a old laptop, and to honest, I'm not into all the latest and greatest super ££££££ costing laptops as i really only use it for a bit of web and listening to music.

I will read the link you kindly sent ~ Thank you very much x

Have a look at this link, it contains the drivers for your comp. It doesn't have drivers for windows 7, but it does have vista and that should work (hopefully). If no, then you might have to go back to a previous OS.

I don't think the coprocessor has anything to do with your sound.     Here are the specs to your computer.  Do you recall getting Sound Blaster install CD for your speakers? If you were on XP and now you are on Win 7 you might need to install the Sound Blaster CD software but it might be different with a lap top. Do you have any of the install discs that originally came with your computer?

Here is a link to the drivers as well.
