Display Issues
« on: September 12, 2005, 08:24:16 PM »
I helped my friend build a computer over the summer and I've encountered a problem that I can't put my finger on.

He's using a Radeon 9700 pro with an LG 17" LCD monitor.

Click Here for the details on the monitor

When using the DVI cable, the monitor is completely blank.  No boot screen or anything, just completely blank.

When he uses the analog cable, the monitor will sometimes go blank for a second and then back on.  If he tries to play a video game, the screen will go blank and the sound will start looping until he pulls the plug on it.

All his drivers are up to date.  It's a brand new monitor and brand new vid card.

He's tried using a radeon 9000 instead and it works fine, so I'm assuming the problem is with the video card and not the monitor.  But this is the second card he's gone through.  The first one just displayed a bunch of lines and dots like when those old nintendo games froze up.

Any ideas?

See to it that the AGP port is running at 66 Hertz (Auto) and that it is set to to 8x (Auto) and not 4x or 2x.

1GB of dual Kingston DDR RAM (2 sticks of 512) and OS is WinXP (home).  As for beeps, no error beeps if that's what you mean.

Set to 66 Hertz.  I couldn't find a specific selection for 4x/6x/8x but there was an "enable 8x AGP" selection that I made sure was on.  For reference, I'm using an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard.

Plugged in DVI and screen would not turn on.  Stayed in standby.  When switched to analog, it was fine until the windows loading screen.  After the loading screen, the monitor gave an error message (not the computer).  Message was as follows:

Quote
Analog

Out of Range

46.1 KHz/86 Hz

Windows must still be running in the background because I can still log in (I type in the password with the error message up and I hear the windows login sound).

Computer still works with Radeon 9000.

Also, I was wondering if it might be a power related issue.  It's a 400W power supply and I have the cable set up in the following manner:

- One cable chaining two disc drives.
- One cable going to frontside case fan.
- One cable chaining Hard Drive and Video Card (the 9700)
- One spare 4-pin cable (2x2 square)

Updated the BIOS.  Still nothing.  This is really starting to bug me.  Could it be that the monitor is defective?

Can you start in safe mode & check the refresh rate setting in windows?
