      http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Click download. Burn the image to CD. Put in the CD drive of the computer that's having an issue. Boot from the CD.
Okay i downloaded and burned  xubuntu to a cd because it small enough for my cd. What do i do next?

Small enough for your CD? Any of them are small enough if you burn the image to CD, not just copy the ISO to a CD.

You didn't burn the ISO directly to the CD as a file did you? If you did, it won't work. You need to burn the image from the ISO to the CD. This can be done with most CD burning software.

Anyway, once you've done that, boot from the CD and copy your files to another drive or device.

However, if you format and reinstall Windows, you won't be able to just copy most of those games back over and have them work. Those and any programs will need to be reinstalled. The only useful thing you're going to be able to copy are files such as videos, documents, pictures, etc.

I burned it last night and it worked and booted up. I will do the copying later when i have time. I will let you know how it goes! k?

Insert the CD...re-boot...and Setup should start automatically...

You realise everything on your HDD will be wiped...correct ?

Pretty certain they don't want to Install XUbuntu...

idea would be backup files to an external drive from within the live environment.

My apologies for not paying attention...

If you made the Live CD then Ubuntu should run on re-boot...

Alternative Live CD instructions using Puppy Linux Bootable CD can also be use, just in case http://help.artaro.eu/index.php/data-recovery/recover-files-from-hard-disk.html#.UCMtZaO2CNR
It would be much easy if you use the link I have posted using Puppy Linux. The ISO file is just a little over 100 mb.
