difficulties creating ms-dos 6.22 startup disc
    « on: November 13, 2012, 02:14:38 PM »
I'm not very familiar with DOS/command line

I've got an old thinkpad 380xd with dos 6.22 freshly put on it i.e. nothing but the OS. I want to partition the disc to have dual boot dos & W98.

I've been looking at the old Microsoft ms-dos 6.22 user’s guide & it lists files that I need to copy to make a boot/startup disc:

    1. msbackup.exe
    2. msbackup.ovl
    3. msbackup.ini
    4. msbackdb.ovl
    5. msbackdr.ovl
    6. msbackfb.ovl
    7. msbackfr.ovl
    8. msbconfig.ovl
    9. default.set
    10. msbackup.log
    11. msbackup.rst
    12. format.com

unfortunately some of them seem to be missing, even when i used C:\dir /s /p /w /on

    So, three questions:

    1. Why aren't they all there (something to do with it being a fresh install of dos)?
    2. Does it matter?
    3. The ComputerHope instructions on “How to create a boot disk” (http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm) seems to be describing a very different process..........I’m confused  ???

Any help with these questions much appreciated.

    TIA

Those files have nothing to do with a boot disk.

What stage are you at?  Do you have Win98 installed?

According to the book i'm looking at (old Microsoft ms-dos 6.22 user’s guide from 1994) boot & startup disk are the same thing & i should make one before creating a partition for the other OS. The instructions:  "(1) insert floppy (2) ....if floppy is formatted type sys c: a: (3) copy the following files...." & there's the list i wrote earlier

So far there's nothing but the ms-dos 6.22 OS - i was wanting to make the boot/startup disk before partitioning.

Of those files only format.com is needed.  The other files are microsoft backup.

          backup of what?

It's the name of a program.  You can use it to back up the HDD to floppy disks IIRC.

The boot disk may be complete with them but they aren't needed for the purposes of partitioning, formatting, copying, or any other purpose except for backing up the HDD (to floppies?)...

          format.com is required though.
