Because Internet Explorer is just awful.
I would switch to either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. In my opinion, they offer a much better browsing experience.

However, to fix your problem, try this:

    Close Internet Explorer
Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Internet Options
    Hit the Advanced tab.
Click Reset, and then Reset again.
    Click Close, then OK.
Reopen Internet Explorer and see if the problem persists.

Sometimes the Flash Plugin can cause this. It's also common if you have any number of AV or security suites installed.

The reason is because IE is designed to be extensible, and provides ways for AV vendors to hook into the browser. If, however, the plugin crashes, IE crashes with the shown message.

Try starting Internet Explorer using Start->Run (Windows Key+R) and entering:

    Code: [Select]
    iexplore -extoff
This will start Internet Explorer in Safe mode, with all Addons and extensions disabled. If this solves the problem, then it was definitely an add-on.

(the OS as well as the IE version in question can be useful here as well)
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

What version of IE are you using?  If you have Windows 7, I suggest you update IE to version 10 if you have not done so.
