1.  Yup, mine is the WD My Passport 500 GB with USB 3.0
2.  I don't understand what you mean when you ask "Did you put a desktop drive in an external case?"
1.  I have the same in 1TB.  Agree with Patio, probably the cable.
BTW, did it ever ask for this:

2.  Nevermind.

Sorry for disappearing again. The thing is, I think I've had the cable for about two years, and I'm not exactly sure where it came from as my sister got it for me. Thank's a ton for the advice, I truly appreciate it.

That does not mean you can't find a replacement cable though...

She gave me ownership to that harddrive so I am free to do what I want with it, it was meant as a present.

I just though that whatever shop she got the harddrive may be willing to send me a replacement cable.

I'm sure they'd be glad to sell you a cable.
Those cables aren't that common yet.  I've only seen them on portable hard drives.

The one that came with mine is 18".  Longer ones from questionable supplier may or may not work properly.  Most are expensive, $12-25 for the 36".

Except for this one from Cable Wholesale, reputable place.
Black-3ft, $4.10
http://www.cablewholesale.com/products/usb-firewire/usb-3.0-cables/product-10u3-03103bk.php

Blue-3ft, $4.09
http://www.cablewholesale.com/products/usb-firewire/usb-3.0-cables/product-10u3-03103.php

It's called:  USB 3.0 Type-A-Male to Micro-B-Male

You see more of the:  USB 3.0 Type-A-Male to Type-B-Male, which are less than $5.

No room for the Type-B Female in the My Passport package.
