how 2 install OS on external HD

Alright, so a "buddy" killed his hard drive in his PC, does anyone know if there is a way to install windows 2000 on an external hard drive from a win xp laptop ?? the HD was formated using win XP.

You will also have to check the laptop maker's manual to verify if the machine supports booting from a USB device otherwise you are spinning your wheels...
