i know this all makes me sound like an idiot and i thank you all for your help. my friend has gone through all the steps to no avail.
its been awhile since i had windows 98 and when they were asking me i drew a blank but they had went to some of the porns sites and gotten the shortcuts on thier desk top as i had said they tried all of those steps prior and could not get rid of the shortcuts. is there something we are missing that we need to do or could do ?
also thier recycle bin came up being gone do to it being a "corrupted file" what can they do to fix this ?
also i would like to take this time and say thank you all for your help with this matter ahead of time this is a great site and has been very helpful.

It's not just the scans, it's doing them in safe mode that is important.

If the system is clean, then Pocket KillBox might be the next thing to try.

As for the recycle bin:
