Help needed

Hi , Can anybody help me with my childrens pc.when i go to switch it on the screen comes up black with a list of the following .

Microsoft windows 98
1 .normal
2. logged (bootleg txt)
3. safe mode
4. step by step
5. comand prompt only
6. safe mode comand prompt only

Than a message appears under that saying
That the following files are missing:
c:\windows\himen.sys
c:\windows\dblbuff.sys
c:\lfshlp.sys

Then a message saying cannot find win.com unable to continue loading windows .


Somebody please help me , i have tryed putting my windows 98 recovery cd-rom in to restore , but it gets to 11% then stops

There's a big problem with that system, and I would suspect hard drive failure.  Get your essential data off there a.s.a.p.  If you are unable to do that yourself, you may need to enlist help.  If you wish to try yourself, I'd recommend replacing the hard drive, reinstalling windows, then installing the original drive as a slave, following which you'll be able to retrieve your old data (if the drive isn't too badly damaged).

It seems to be an old computer (win98) and i have to agree with rob about the harddrive failure.

1. do you have important information or data on the Hard drive?

2. how old is the computer

Hi ,

No its only used for childrens school work ,msn messenger  and bebo .There is no other information on it .The computer is nearly 7 yrs old .

Eek.  On its last legs then.  You could buy a new one you know for very little.  Perhaps joint Christmass and birthday present!
