Help computer infested with viruses
« on: November 29, 2006, 11:21:28 PM »
I have been having problems with my computer it is only 2 months old - I got internet about a month ago and I started having problems right away.  I started to get pop ups and then all of a sudden I was not able to go on the internet - when I click on internet explorer it just flashes and then disappears.  I ran Adaware from a CD a friend gave me and the scan showed tons of stuff I deleted/quarantined all of them but the problem continued.  I came here and looked at the posts then I tried to do a scan in safe mode but when I get to safe mode I only get the black screen with the four safe mode marks on the corners no taskbar or icons. How can I ran a scan if safe mode is like that?  Now I'm getting a message that says to insert the windows xp cd some files missing.  Also how can do more scans if I can't access the internet? I tried to download the programs you mentioned on the  posts onto a CD and it would not let me.  Sorry if this is too long but I'm desperate.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

Do you have a real Windows CD, or a restore CD or what to reinstall everything. That sounds like your best bet, a lot easier and faster than this might be, but that's up to you.

Next would be using Safe Computing practices. Load on your protection BEFORE you even connect to the net for the first time!

What were you using for protection before? How about posting some details, model number, etc. of your system. How do you connect to the internet?

Post back if more help needed as well.

Ok here is some info on the computer It is a Dell Dimension 1100, Intel Celeron D Processor 325(2.53 GHz), 256 MB DDR SDRAM
I have comcast for internet, and I was not using any type of anti virus stuff because everytime I tried to download the free MacAfee software from Comcast's website the computer would freeze.  As far as the restore CD the only CD that came with the computer is one that says Windows Works 6.0, the other ones are drivers for the printer and monitor and nothing else.

Thank you for replying back

You are probably going to be re-loading the operating system. Don't panic.

A friend of mine has a newer Dell (not quite a year old, not sure of the model) and the system recovery (if you need to reload the OS) is built in to the computer. Actually my friends symptom and yours were the same.

By the time he was asking for help, the OS was gone and giving the same prompt as you are receiving even in safe mode. Will your computer boot to normal windows?

Contact Dell with your model and serial number and ask about this. If you have access to the internet from a uncomprimised computer, you can use Dell's online support for immediate help.

It seemed they told him to hit one of the F keys at boot and it took him to the hidden recovery system.

Thank you  for your response Fordtruckmaniac I will try Dell's website although when I called them they were not much help!  Just so that you guys know I was able to download Spybot and other programs onto a flash drive - the problem is I was only able to run Adaware, Spybot when I click on it to run gives the language selection thing then a screen flashes really quick and it is gone, samething happens with AVG and another one that you guys suggested!  any other suggestions?
            Thanks for your replies

You are going to be better off to just wipe it and reload it.

If you bought this new and it had no Recovery disks, its hidden.

Dell's online support chat is good and the response is immediate.

They can get you lined out in short order.

I am amazed at how many people I know don't realize the unfortunate reality of going online these days!  The last 3 people I know who bought new puters and don't really do much but a little surfing had no idea about anti-virus programs and that you pretty much get infected right away with XP >.

Next time make sure you have an antivirus program, spyware program, and firewall with the latest defs. before going online.
