    RAM Booster?
    « on: February 16, 2007, 06:37:38 AM »
Any opinions about RAM booster programs? I am trying RAMBooster v2.0, but have seen several others on freeware sites.
Are they any good? Do they work? Any problems with them?

    I use Win XP Pro

Are these the ones that are supposed to free up RAM?
    They do nothing for you.
All they do is move some things out of RAM into the page file, which just slows your PC down.
Avoid them, they do no good.
    Just my opinions though.

I agree. They don't do anything Windows couldn't do. If you're low on RAM, buy some more ;) With the speedup, you'll wonder how you ever survived before.

      And I'll agree with that.
More RAM is the easiest and cheapest way to increase performance (usually).
These programs to free RAM do more harm than good, it'd be better to just get some more RAM if you're low on it.

It may have been appealing when RAM was $150 for 4 megs., but there is no need for such crappola now.

Lol, ram boosting tools probably use more than 4mb.

I had one beast of a RAM booster (before I knew how useless they were) that sucked loads of RAM, it took up about 64Mb.
I only had 256Mb at that time, so it was a bit of a blow.
Oh, and the onboard GPU took up a further 32Mb.
          So it really reduced performance.
That's why I stay away from them now.

Well, we all like a free lunch! But this one seems to be not so good. I have uninstalled it now. Thanks again.

What a lot of them do is they tell Windows they are using ridiculous amounts of RAM which cases Windows to ship data off to the paging file to make room for the RAM booster. The booster then gives back its memory and, in theory, you have free physical memory.

I have no doubt some tools are useful for optimising memory, but the majority of them don't really do anything that Windows couldn't do normally.
