    Uninstalling Programs
    « on: May 26, 2007, 08:36:15 PM »
I am running Windows XP SP2 . Can not uninstall AVG anti-virus program from avg uninstall icon OR control center . If i highlight avg in control panel windows tries to install avg firewall & says it can't before disabling windows firewall , though avg firewall is already installed & functional . Any suggestions appreciated .

    Thanks

    cdo...

If you're using AVG's firewall, then Windows firewall should be disabled.

Go into the Security center through your Control Panel.

Make sure Window's firewall is turned off.

Now...try and uninstal AVG through the Control Panel.

Once it's uninstalled...turn the Window's firewall back on.

Please post back with results, please.

Actually, you have to disable the protectionin the system tray and THEN uninstall it.

If you have done this already, try reinstalling and THEN uninstalling.

Out of curiosity, why do you want it off and what are you planning to use?

Here is a method directly from the AVG Forums:

    Quote
Try the following with a fresh copy of the install file. This is the preferred method for uninstall / re-install....

    1. Download & save [never to Desktop or My Documents] to a folder on C drive (remember whereabouts) the latest AVG Free installation package from [free.grisoft.com]
    2. Check the download file MD5 hash value [forum.grisoft.cz]
    3. If it is correct run the AVG Free install file
    4. Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.
    5. Restart your computer then...
    6. Now reinstall AVG using the setup file you got in step 1 and update it....

OK... here are some general install tips to follow...

Download the install file to your computer... do not ever try to run from the internet as that will always cause issues. We also recommend that you do not run if from a directory with spaces in the name.. such as your Desktop or My Documents folders...

Spybot S&D has a feature called TeaTimer & AdAware has Adwatch. If these are enabled it can affect the installation of AVG. We always recommend temporarily disabling these before installing....& restart the computer twice before re-enabling.

Many users don't disable the other protection programs as they should so they can stop AVG from installing properly.... such as Windows Defender can stop AVG from adding in its required startup items. We always recommend temporarily disabling before installing....& restart the computer twice before re-enabling

Note that they suggest disabling your other protection programs...i would disconnect from the web for this step.

I removed AVG because i was having alot of " hang up " issues . Using Windows One Care at present and it seems to work better . Thanks for the suggestions on removing . As usual the forum "knows"..  :) :)

Next question may be silly but what the heck i am good at that ..

I notice that every time i go to Help on XP and click Advanced System Information i get a different reading for my Available Physical Memory . Is this normal ? I saw a post somewhere that said physical memory does not change . just wondering.

If this is happening then i suspect the machine has other issues. Reason i say this is out of most Anti-Virus programs AVG is one of the least demending on system resources when scanning....probably in the Top Five.

So to get to the bottom of this post as much info as you can find on your system etc and list all the current security apps you have and we can go from there...
